New York Governor Kathy Hochul selected Harlem Senator Brian Benjamin as her Lieutenant Governor, reports said on Wednesday, August 25. Reportedly Hochul informed Tuesday, August 24 that she had already decided on a Lieutenant Governor and that she wanted her number two pick to come from New York City. Other candidates on Hochul's list included Bronx state Senator Jamaal Bailey and Brooklyn Democratic Chair and state Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.
Bailey tweeted, "All about the Benjamins about to be played on a statewide level! As we reimagine New York, we continue to move forward with the best. Huge congrats to my brother @NYSenBenjamin and his wonderful family on this well-deserved appointment as our new Lieutenant Governor! #HarlemWorld." Brian Benjamin, 45, represents Harlem. It is not clear at the moment when Benjamin, who succeeded current Council member Bill Perkins, will take over the role.

Who is Brian Benjamin?
Benjamin, a Harvard graduate has served in the State Senate since 2017 and currently serves as the chair of the Budget and Revenue Committee and as Senior Assistant Majority Leader. He had an unsuccessful run for New York City Comptroller earlier this year. Benjamin's profile on New York State Senate website says he was "born in Harlem to a Caribbean mother who came to this country seeking new opportunities. Though they didn’t have a college education, his parents were fortunate enough to find well-paying union jobs, which allowed them to provide Brian and his siblings with a middle class upbringing." He has established himself as a leader in criminal justice reform and affordable housing in the New York State Senate. According to reports, his proposal to keep rent controlled apartments affordable was a part of the history-making Tenant Protection Act of 2019.

Benjamin is married to Cathleen McCadden Benjamin. The couple married in 2018 and have a three-year-old daughter, Caroline. Benjamin and Cathleen announced recently that they're expecting their second child. "Cat, Caroline and I are pleased to announce that we are expecting a second child(a baby girl)!!
