Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, confused "Western Australia" with "Washington State" in his attempt to attack the Democrats over COVID-19 restrictions on Wednesday, December 29. He wrongly claimed that "Washington State" had banned dancing at private parties on New Year's Eve.

"Blue-state Dems are power-drunk authoritarian kill-joys," Cruz wrote on Twitter for which he was heavily mocked. "Washington State: NO DANCING ALLOWED!!! Any rational & free citizen: Piss off." In his presently deleted tweet, screenshots of which soon went viral on social media, Cruz was responding to a post containing an image of a comment thread from Facebook. In the comment thread, WA Government responded to a question about the pandemic restrictions to be implemented on New Year's Eve by saying that "Dancing is strictly not permitted." What Cruz did not realize was that the comment thread came from the Facebook page of the Government of Western Australia, not Washington State.

Since the postal abbreviation for Washington state is WA, there is a distinct possibility that Cruz might have gotten confused about its usage in the comments.

'Ted Cruz is so clueless'

Cruz faced a lot of criticism for his goof-up. "Since @tedcruz deleted this, I’ll post as a reminder to all of us to DO YOUR RESEARCH before posting misinformation. WA means 'Western Australia' not Washington state," one of them said, while another noted, "The 'WA government' here is Western Australia. Not everything revolves around the US all the time." A third added, "This is hysterical. The Cancun Buffoon, Rafael Cruz, saw a Facebook screenshot about 'WA' banning dancing and reflexively posted a tantrum about Washington Dems. The 'WA' was 'Western Australia.' Oh, Ted." One more stated, "So @tedcruz deleted this angry tweet after realizing 'WA Government' isn’t Washington State, it’s 'Western Australia.' FYI Deaths per million •USA: 2529 •AUS: 86 But more outrage over a situation that doesn’t exist than the ~29X higher death rate in America. Smh terrible."

The next remarked, "Yeah, Harvard, right?" One more commented, "Fact-Check: Western Australia is not a Democrat-held state in America, Ted Cruz is a dumba**." One more noted, "Ted Cruz is so clueless, he actually thought Washington State responded to COVID by outlawing dancing in your own home. He also confused Washington State with Western Australia. Ted Cruz doesn't understand humans, and he never will." A commenter tweeted, "The post that Ted Cruz is complaining about here is from the 'state' of... Western Australia. Maybe log off, big guy." Another said, "Ted Cruz does not know the difference between Western Australia and Washington State." Another quipped, "This is about Western Australia not Washington State lmaoooo Ted Cruz is a f**king idiot." A person reacted with, "Do you think Western Australia is part of the United States, Rafael?"
