'New Amsterdam' Season 3 Episode 5: Is Helen's relationship with Cassian a way to take revenge on Max?

Dr Helen reveals that she knows Max dated someone earlier and kept it a secret from her

If you thought Max was the only one who was taken over by a green-eyed monster, as shown in 'New Amsterdam' Episode 5 trailer, you would be wrong. Max (Ryan Eggold) walks in to tell Helen (Freema Agyeman) about their Operation Blood Flow at the hospital and how he's planning to rectify the blood shortage, only to turn rather pale himself, when he spots Cassian (Daniel Dae Kim) and Helen kissing. Helen seems unnaturally unruffled by this, almost like she was waiting to hurt Max with this new information. She refuses to even discuss it, though Max seems quite thrown by this new development.

We get to see what jealous Max looks like when he gives her some passive-aggressive attitude. He says that he has been busy sorting out the blood issue in the hospital while she was 'busy with other things'.

The two finally stop with the veiled comments when they sit down for a chat at the end of the day. Helen says there's no reason for things to be awkward between them and Max agrees that would be silly. He asks Helen why she didn't him. Helen rather aggressively says that she didn't know she was supposed to.

Max says that he thought she would want to tell him. Helen then brings up how Max keeps secrets from her. It's brought to like that Helen knows about the relationship Max was in a year ago. It's clear that Helen is still hurt that Max hid this from her.

Max begins to explain that he was extremely fragile at that point. He wanted to tell her that he was protecting something. But before he could, Cassian interrupts. There is beautiful music being sung at this point, by Broadway singers, who Max has asked to come to the hospital to inspire people to give blood and Cassian asks Helen to dance.

Helen then gets up to dance with Cassian while Max watches on wistfully. Fans were saddened that this is the awkward dynamic Helen and Max now share. One fan tweeted, "The dynamics have changed moving forward...Max and Helen Awkwardddddddd scenes...how did we get here... #sharpwin #NewAmsterdam." Another tweeted that this long drawn out suspense over will they won't they is enough saying, "Max and Helen really need to talk about their feelings. I hate this slow burn #NewAmsterdam."

Others, however, and we have to agree, said, "i lowkey love when max and helen fight it’s so entertaining #newamsterdam"

Will Max and Helen finally have a chance to have the conversation they need to and clear up the issues that stand before them? Or has there just been too much water under this bridge?

In the upcoming episode, it seems that tension is still running high between the two of them as Max tries to tackle systemic racism in the hospital. Helen, however, accuses him of not listening to the people he's trying to help.
