In Season 3 Episode one, we see Dr Cassian Shin the new daredevil trauma surgeon trying to get closer to Dr Helen Sharpe. But Sharpe, for reasons best known to her at the time, literally physically recoils from him saying she can't do this. It's a move we see her regretting though in episode two. Dr Helen Sharpe tries to make amends by bringing a 'contactless delivery' coffee to Dr Shin which she offers to him along with an apology. Dr Shin is polite but cold, and says he'll take the coffee but there's no need for an apology. After all he tells her why force something that's not there. He tells her that Covid took away a lot of things, at the hospital they focus on the lives lost, but there were other casualties as well.

Dr Helen Sharpe doesn't have too long to brood over this rebuttal though because she comes across Ella who is pregnant with Dr Kapoor's grandchild. Ella doesn't realize it until she describes her symptoms to Helen, that she is in fact in labour. Since Ella has no other family, Dr Helen clears her schedule to stay with her during her labor. Part of the distraction technique that Helen is forced to use to take Ella's mind off her pain, is to tell her juicy details about her love life. This is when we get to know what was behind Helen rebuffing Dr Shin. Helen says that she and Dr Shin began dating at the start of the pandemic and she fantasized about him for months. But when he reached out and touched her she physically recoiled and she can't understand why she did something like that. Is it simply that she is too scared to be touched by someone, or is it a case of what they had simply fizzled out, she wonders.

Clearly, Dr Helen gives the matter some thought. At the end of Episode 2, we see Dr Helen Sharpe go to Dr Shin and she says that she's not ready. But she goes onto say that she's not ready to call it quits. She then reaches out and takes his hand and puts it against her cheek. With that, it looks like for now at least romance is back on the board for Sharpe and Shin, a fact that Sharpwin fans who were hoping for some romance between Max and Helen will no doubt be heartbroken over.

You can catch Season Three of 'New Amsterdam' on Tuesdays at 10 pm on NBC.
