Nancy Pelosi spent over $500K flying private while calling climate change 'existential threat'
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has spent nearly $500,000 on private jet travel since 2020 despite advocating that US has a moral obligation to address climate change. Her campaign paid $423,707 to Virginia-based Advanced Aviation Team and another $65,457 to California-based private jet provider Clay Lacy Aviation as per Federal Election Commission filings.
The Speaker had earlier described climate change as an 'existential' threat. In her opening address to Congress in 2019 she said, "we must face the existential threat of our time: the climate crisis." "The entire Congress must work to put an end to the inaction and denial of science that threaten the planet and the future." Pelosi has even suggested, to the criticism of others, that climate change issue is more important than China's human rights abuses. She said, "climate is an overriding issue, and China is a leading emitter in the world."

Pelosi, who led a 21-member congressional delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021 said that her commitment to addressing climate change comes down to her beliefs as a devout Catholic. "For me, it's a religious thing," Pelosi said just three months after spending $67,604.93 on private air travel. "I believe this is God's creation, and we have a moral obligation to be good stewards."
Surprisingly, many netizens supported Pelosi on the issue of her spending nearly $500,000 on private jets. One user commented, "As long as it's her own money she's spending, so what? Airline service during pandemic not exactly reliable." Another said, "There's also a very real world threat to her life/safety. For example, there was a massive MAGA crowd that violently stormed the Capital last year looking for her. It'd be way too dangerous for her to fly on commerical flights."
A third commented, "Did it ever occur to you that in this age of death threats from right wing terrorists that she needs to travel in a manner that insures her personal safety. She is a vital part of our government." A fourth added, "She's also Speaker of the House and 2nd in line to the presidency." However not all netizens were in support of her as one wrote, "I hope that is her personal money not the taxpayers ???!?! Even way, where is her so called obligation to climate control!??!!".
Interpreting Pelosi words, "we have a moral obligation" to reduce emissions, one user said, "No, you have an obligation, it does not apply to me, or the rest of the elites.." "'Only ok for me, not for thee', should be her campaign slogan", wrote another. Someone else added, "It's us lower class people who have to change to save the earth, not the high and mighty."

In recent years, the Democratic National Committee has voiced commitment to addressing climate change while spending hundreds of thousands to Advanced Aviation Team. Private jets produce a significantly higher amount of emissions per passenger than commercial flights, leading environmentalists to criticize its continued use.
