'Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal': Paul Murdaugh's girlfriend 'ignored red flags' after family allegedly murdered a man in 2015
HAMPTON COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA: In February 2019, the tragic death of a 19-year-old girl named Mallory Beach stunned the world and everyone rallied behind the Beach family to get them justice. A lot of things came out when the investigation started happened and Paul Murdaugh, son of influential lawyer Alex Murdaugh, was charged with multiple counts of murder. Netflix documentary ‘Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal’ sheds a light on various aspects of the case that shocked the entire community. However, one of the most important moments comes when Paul Murdaugh’s ex-girlfriend and Mallory’s friend Morgan Doughty shared some important details about her relationship with Paul and how she missed all the red flags in her relationship.
Morgan noted that she first met Mallory at a party where Mallory came right up to her and complimented her shoes. Since then, she, Mallory, and Miley became best of friends. Mallory was dating Anthony while Miley was dating Anthony’s cousin Connor. Later, Morgan started dating Paul and they all started hanging out together. At first, the relationship was good and Paul was always doing cute things for her like making big placards for her to wish her on birthdays or Valentine’s Day. But everything changed when he started drinking alcohol and the entire group started to call him ‘Timmy’ when he was really drunk.

Guns, guns everywhere
While talking about their relationship, Morgan revealed that they got into a fight once and Paul was being really aggressive. At first, he was driving okay, but he lost control on a turn and the car wrecked into a ditch. Morgan said, “The truck was sideways. He had so many guns in his car, like, guns were everywhere. Beer cans were everywhere. So I dial 911 and Paul hangs it up and throws my phone and Paul calls Randolph (Paul’s grandfather). Then, he calls his dad. Alex, Randolph, and Maggie show up in no time.”
Morgan thought they would ask the duo if they were okay or not, but that didn’t happen. Before checking up on them, they opened the back of the truck and took out all the guns, and cleared the truck. They asked if Morgan called 911, to which, she replied “yes” and that’s when the Murdaugh family got frustrated and told her that she shouldn’t have called 911.
Missing all the red flags
Even though Morgan had broken up with Paul after the accident, she speaks in the documentary about the disturbing behavior in the years leading up to the crash. While speaking, Morgan noted that Paul started to drink in excess and would become violent whenever someone tried to stop him. He slapped Morgan once and even punched her on her knee one night.
But as the documentary progressed, we get to know that the Murdaugh family has a really dark past and they have been linked to the deaths of several people. One such case happened in 2015 when Buster was reportedly one of the accused in the murder of Stephen Smith. Morgan opened up about one incident that changed everything for her and she realized that the Murdaugh family is nothing like how they portray themselves in public.
“This girl had messaged me on Facebook letting me know she had reason to believe that it could have been Paul or Buster who had killed Stephen. So, when we met for a dinner, I asked ‘why is this girl saying all that,’” recalled Morgan.
However, the response given by the Murdaugh family was the first time she felt that the situation is pretty alarming.
“So, Alex, Maggie, Buster, Paul, and I were all at their home and were sitting in the kitchen and had just finished eating and I asked them why this girl was saying these things and they laughed it off, and then they said ‘we wouldn’t kill that f*****’. Looking back now that was the first red flag that I ignored, but I thought, surely these people wouldn’t just murder someone,” Morgan said.
This was the first time that Morgan felt nervous about being in a relationship with Paul, but didn’t want to say anything because she knew how powerful the entire family is.
As of now, Alex Murdaugh is currently facing 106 grand jury criminal charges which include murder, drugs, and financial fraud.
