'Monique Olivier: Accessory to Kill': Where is Monique Olivier now?
RENNES, FRANCE: Netflix has a knack for telling bone-chilling stories in the form of extraordinary documentaries that take the viewers back in time and give them an idea of what actually happened during that crime or scandal. Be it ‘Sons of Sam’, ‘The Keepers’ or the most recently released ‘Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal’, the streaming platform gave us a detailed look at why these crimes happened and if someone tried stopping them or not. But it seems the streaming platform is in no mood to stop and has come forward with a documentary on the infamous couple Michel Paul Fourniret and Monique Olivier.
A lot of people might be thinking why Netflix is making a documentary on a couple and what intrigued the streamer to have them as the subject of a documentary. Titled ‘Monique Olivier: Accessory to Kill’, the five-part series tells us why Netflix found them sinister enough to make a documentary on them. It all started in 1987 when a serial killer named Michel Paul Fourniret confessed to killing 12 people in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2003. His killing spree ended in June 2003 when he was arrested for the attempted kidnapping of a teenage girl in Ciney, Belgium. During interrogation, Fourniret confessed to killing 9 people and was given life imprisonment without possibility of parole. However, his wife Monique was also given punishment in the case and was sent to prison for 28 years. So, what exactly happened that forced the authorities to put Monique behind bars? And where is she now? Let’s take a look.

Who is Monique Olivier?
The story between Olivier and Fourniret began in 1987 when Olivier responded to an advertisement in a Christian magazine. In the advert, Fourniret made it clear that he was a prisoner seeking to have a friendship with someone to fill his time. We can assume that he wanted a pen pal. Even after knowing that he was a convicted criminal, Olivier responded to that ad because she understood how lonely he must be feeling. This is how their friendship began and they started writing letters to each other. A total of 217 letters were exchanged between them (133 were sent by Fourniret and 84 by Olivier) over a period of 10 months and after that, he was released from prison.
The reports suggest that the duo shared every little detail of their lives in those letters and even when Fourniret admitted that he was sent to prison for sexually assaulting several girls, she didn’t pull back. It turned out that Olivier fell in love with Fourniret because he made her feel important. She wasn’t feeling lonely now and made her assure that he would give her a better life by harming her abusive ex-boyfriend named Andre.
Fourniret and Olivier came together and embarked on a journey that it filled with abuse and murders. They started choosing their victims and started abusing them. However, things went from bad to worse when the duo began killing their victims as well. Olivier never stopped her partner from doing such heinous crimes instead, she would assist him in these crimes by being actively involved in kidnappings, and making Fourniret ready to sexually abuse young girls. The worst part in all of this is that she kept the victims locked for as long as her husband wanted and even manually checked their virginities. She never told anyone about her husband doing such crimes and was an active accomplice. But everything came crashing down when Fourniret was arrested while attempting to kidnap a young girl in 2003.
Olivier knew that it was time for them to pay for their heinous crime and told everything to the authorities. She told them that her husband murdered eight females between 1987 and 2003. Olivier also revealed that she was an active accomplice and knew everything that her husband did.
Where is Monique Olivier now?
Before standing trial in 2008, it was believed that Olivier was submissive and was scared of her husband’s activities so much that she never tried to stop him from raping girls. In 2008, when the trial began, she tried to prove how abusive Fourniret was and continued threatening her and their child’s life. Soon, it was revealed that Olivier’s IQ was 130+, and that made prosecutors believe that she was intelligent enough to be the driving force behind these crimes and manipulate the authorities into thinking that she didn’t do anything and wanted to help the authorities.
But the most horrifying part of the trial happened when it was revealed that the couple used their own child to abduct, sexually abuse, and murder multiple women.
After an almost two-month trial, the jury gave a verdict and found her guilty of accessory in multiple crimes, including murders, rapes, or attempted rapes. She was sentenced to a life term without the possibility of parole, which means that she was sent to prison for 28 years. She is currently serving her sentence in a prison in Rennes. However, she will be standing trial later this year for the murder of Johanna Parrish and the abductions of two other victims.
'Monique Olivier: Accessory to Kill' is now streaming on Netflix.
