Dale Paul Melvin: MI man arrested after suspicious car found outside Supreme Court

Capitol Police took a Michigan man into custody Tuesday, October 5 morning after a suspicious vehicle was reported outside of the US Supreme Court building, causing quite a commotion. Shortly before 10 am on Tuesday, the Capitol Police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked on First Street NE near the court. In a cautious move, police shut down a number of roads in the area.

Capitol Police announced the arrest of Dale Paul Melvin, 55, from Kimball, Michigan after his SUV parked outside the Supreme Court building caused a street shutdown on Tuesday morning. "One of our teams just moved in and extracted the man from the SUV. The man is in custody. Everyone is safe. The suspect has been identified as Dale Paul Melvin (DOB: 9/4/66) of Kimball, MI, " Capitol Police said in a statement. During a press conference, Capitol Police Deputy Chief Jason Bell informed that Melvin had driven his SUV near the Supreme Court building and parked illegally. When officers approached, Bell said, Melvin "made a statement to the effect of, 'The time for talking is done.'"

Capitol Police noted they moved in and extracted Melvin after attempting to talk to him to exit the vehicle. All streets around the courthouse were closed and traffic was redirected away from the building. US Capitol Police Containment and Emergency Response Team were seen arriving at the scene to assist officers on site. The incident comes just a day after the high court was back in session on Monday, October 4. It is not known at the moment if employees at the courthouse were evacuated following the incident.

The roads affected by the shutdown were - First Street between Independence Avenue, SE and Constitution Avenue, NE - Second Street between East Capitol Street and Constitution Avenue, NE - East Capitol Street between First and Second Streets, NE.
