SDCC 2022: Fans unhappy with ‘boring’ Peggy Carter’s storyline in ‘What If...?’ Season 2

'They could do so much better with these 'What If' stories,' a fan said, as creators announced the release date for Season 2 at the San Diego Comic-Con

On Friday, July 22, the Marvel Animated Multiverse expanded with new glimpses at 'What If...?' Season 2, 'Marvel Zombies', and 'Spider-Man: Freshman Year.' 'What If...?' Season 2 will premiere in early 2023, and a third season has already been ordered.

'What If...?' was a huge stride forward in Phase 4 because it expanded on the foundation of the MCU's Multiverse and was Marvel Studios' first excursion into animation. Season 1 had given us Infinity Ultron, Doctor Strange Supreme, Captain Carter, and a slew of other bizarre scenarios, and Season 2 appears to be promising even more. 'What If...?' was previously confirmed in the official production brief for 'Moon Knight', its Season 2 was supposed to come out by the end of 2022. In the meantime, Disney+ Netherlands sent out a newsletter suggesting that the animated premiere will take place on July 20, but this was untrue. Marvel Studios has now announced when 'What If...?' Season 2 will be available on Disney+, and it appears that it will be delayed.

SDCC 2022: Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira to headline ‘Walking Dead’ spin-off, fans say ‘can’t wait’

A behind-closed-doors look at a handful of heroes and villains from the MCU's multiversal universes was unveiled during Marvel's animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2022. 'What If...?' The season 2 trailer reveals that Captain Carter returns accompanied by Black Widow and Steve Rogers in his Season 1 Iron Man suit. The series will include a racing episode starring Valkyrie and Iron Man on the planet Sakaar from 'Thor: Ragnarok', an episode in which characters from 'Shang-Chi' battle Odin and other Asgardians; a medieval episode set in 1602; and an appearance by old Peggy and Steve Rogers post 'Avengers: Endgame'. Neil Gaiman wrote the eight-issue miniseries Marvel 1602 in 2003. Doctor Doom, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Nick Fury, and other Marvel superheroes from the Elizabethan era are also included in the story.

'What If...?', created by AC Bradley, who also penned some 'Ms Marvel' episodes, premiered on Disney Plus in 2021. This animated series, which is based on a comics anthology series, intriguingly approaches the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather than sticking to the timeline fans are familiar with, it explores alternate timelines in the multiverse to see what might have happened if the events in the films had taken a different course. The first nine episodes included a wide range of Marvel brands and characters, including Iron Man, Black Panther, and Captain America. The first episode, for example, speculates on what might have happened if Peggy Carter had been administered the Super Soldier Serum and become Captain America. The second season, which will also have nine episodes, is predicted to cause havoc and change up the tales for many more Marvel characters. Captain Carter as seen in 'What If...?' is not the same Captain Carter as seen in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness', according to writer AC Bradley and director Bryan Andrews, who were on stage at Comic-Con to discuss the new season.

Many fans were not pleased when the 'What If...?' Season 2 was announced at SDCC. One of the tweets by unhappy fans read, "What If is such a cool concept boggled down by a limited imagination in the writer's room. What if Captain Carter fought the Hydra Stomper? I'd skip the episode, that's what. Show me something exciting damn."

Another fan questioned the future of the character, Peggy, "how did they make peggy so boring."

Questioning why the series is not trying to venture into further universes, a fan tweeted, "Seeing the reports of What If season 2 from #SDCC… what happened to endless possibilities? Locking yourself into the MCU is terribly limiting. You have an VAST universe to pick from. #WhatIf."

One fan hoped to have a different experience than that of Season 1 and wrote, "I hope What If...? season 2 is better because aside from a couple episodes I just couldn't get into it."

Demanding Marvel pay more attention to other characters equally, a fan wrote, "WHAT IF...? marvel gave more attention to characters who are actually interesting instead of peggy carter."

Unhappy with the current batch of characters, a fan wrote, "how bout y'all give us some INTERESTING what if scenarios! with actual INTERESTING characters! is that too much to ask for?"

While criticizing the current line-up, a fan wrote, "Holy shit y'all imagination is terrible."

Another fan tweeted, "What if writers creating the most uninteresting scenarios possible."

An OG fan shared the possible plots that the Marvel Universe could further delve into by tweeting, "Why the f**k do they refuse to take advantage of their premise What if the other half got snapped What if the nuke was a dude/Tony couldn’t catch it What if Thor was killed by thanos instead of Loki TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR PREMISE."

Another fan tweeted, "Hope we can get some Shang-Chi #Whatif stories, and PLEASE don't forget T'challa and Wakanda. It's one thing to not have him in live action, but you can't erase him from the mulitverse too. #RecastTChalla #SDCC2022 #SDCC."

'What If...?' Season 2 will be available on Disney+ in 2023.
