'Spider-Man: Far From Home' - What if another superhero had been available to spoil Mysterio's plans?

Things might have gone very differently for Mysterio if another hero could fight the elemental threat.

Marvel’s ‘What if…?’ is still a long way from its release date, but there’s no limit to the speculation that can be made with the wealth of stories that have made up the MCU so far. We’ve already covered films like the 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Ant-Man', 'Captain America', the 'Avengers' and the first 'Spider-Man' movie.

Now, we take a look at ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and ask - what if another hero had been available to fight Mysterio’s elementals?

As ‘Avengers: Endgame’ proved, the MCU is now home to a LOT of superheroes, even discounting the ones off in space. It’s a little hard to believe that ALL of them were too busy to stop a threat that could destroy the world. Spider-Man was obviously Nick Fury’s last choice, so what if any of Marvel’s other heroes had been available?

It doesn’t matter which one, really, considering that the threat was a hoax by Mysterio to lure Spider-Man in, gain his trust, and procure the E.D.I.T.H. glasses. Mysterio only set the plan in motion to gain Spider-Man’s trust - if any other of Earth’s mightiest heroes are available, Mysterio’s plan falls apart. He would have to manufacture another threat, one specifically tailored to bring Spider-Man to come swinging. What better threat could that be than to reveal Spider-Man’s identity to the world and frame him for murder - as he did in the movie’s mid-credit scene?

It is the perfect way to isolate Spider-Man from his friends and allies. Mysterio has the tech to do it, and would only need to ensure that the video was sent anonymously. It gives Mysterio the opportunity to present himself as the only one on Peter’s side, and earn his trust. From there, it’s easier than ever to convince Peter that he does not deserve Tony Stark’s legacy and to hand E.D.I.T.H. over to Mysterio.

Peter may or may not still find out that Mysterio is a fraud, but with Peter’s allies turned against him, Mysterio would have no problem defeating Spider-Man once and for all - even televising the web-slinger’s defeat, to cement Mysterio’s reputation as the world’s greatest hero.

It might seem incredibly lucky for Mysterio that no other heroes were available in his plot to hoodwink Spider-Man - but seen from another angle, it probably would have been even greater luck if they were.
