A now-viral Reddit post details how a young woman was sent away from her own engagement party after speaking ill of her fiance's sister. On Reddit's well-liked "Am I The A**hole" forum, a post, titled “AITA for telling my fiancé to leave our own engagement party after insulting my sister for once being a prostitute and a high school dropout,” written by a user called u/Chemical-Dot765, has garnered more than 13,000 upvotes and 2,400 comments.

The man claimed that the incident occurred while he and his 32-year-old fiancée, Lilly, were recently hosting an engagement party for their friends and family. The post states, "My sister (39F) Kate was nineteen and was given custody of me and our younger sister. Kate dropped out of school and started working as a prostitute to keep us from going without a place to live and being placed in foster care."

He claims Kate worked as a cashier and engaged in prostitution to pay for their rent and food, but she was still able to complete high school, earn her GED, and open her own beauty salon. However, the post states, "Kate admits that her time as a prostitute was the darkest period in her life, and me and our little sister have never forgotten the sacrifice Kate made for us."

During a conversation at the party, Kate disclosed how she and her husband had planned a vacation but ultimately decided against going and had instead decided to save the money for repairs to their salon.

However, Lilly "taunted" her by saying, "If you want extra money, you can always leave the salon and go back to being a wh**e for a living." When Kate began to cry, her husband took her by the hand and motioned for Lilly to leave.

“I didn’t care where she went. Just leave so I didn’t have to look at her,” the post reads. “Lilly was arguing but I snapped at her to get out of my sight until she was gone. My future in-laws call me heartless and cruel to Lilly.”

According to him, her parents advised him to "do the mature thing" and talk to her instead of "publicly sending her away" to "humiliate" her.

The man says, "I still have trouble looking at Lilly after knowing she's getting those things from Kate. I realize what I did was embarrassing for Lilly and it wasn't the best way to handle the situation," and asks, "Was it my fault that Lilly was sent away?"

More than 2,400 users commented on the post, many criticizing the man’s fiancée for her rude comments.

“Lilly definitely needs to be humbled. What she did is cruel,” commented one user.

“He needs to take the ring back, sell it and help Sissy with repairs at the store,” commented another. “Then they can all go to Hawaii instead of to the wedding.”

“YTA if you marry this girl,” wrote one user.

“Your sister went through hell to put food on the table for you and your younger sister. Lily didn’t care about that, and consequently neither did your childhood,” wrote another user. “Maybe you should think about what that means for her feelings towards you, future children, etc. Some things cannot be taken back.”

“This is one hell of a deal and absolutely needs to be an immediate engagement and end of relationship,” commented another user. “If you don’t, you tell your sister that you can forgive someone who avoided her for no other reason than to hurt her. Do not do it. Your sister deserves better.”
