The mother-daughter duo are 43-year-old Tara Book and 23-year-old Brittany Buras. According to the St Tammany Parish sheriff's office, Book called 911 at 8:30am on Tuesday, October 18 and told them that she had shot her daughter and was going to shoot herself next. Deputies went to their house in 790 Lane Street in the Mandeville area and found their bodies. According to the parish records, Book was the owner of the home and Buras was a former student at Covington High School. Neighbors told FOX 8 that the two women had lived in that house for two years and they "never expected" this to happen. One neighbor said that she had seen Book often and was "mind blown about it." "We just don’t see these kinds of things out there. Many prayers for the family. They seemed very nice, never hostile," a neighbor said while another said, "It does bother me being this close to home, I moved here for a better life. To have this right across the street is pretty troublesome."
People were horrified and saddened by the news of this murder-suicide. They have been offering prayers and condolences, on WWLTV's YouTube channel, where the incident was posted. "People with Mental health issues need help. There are so many now. So sad. Blessings," commented a user. "Absolutely awful, truly heartbreaking and unfortunate," wrote another.
People were also confused as to what might have led the Book to take such a drastic step. One user commented, "You never will know what going through people mind at the time when things like this happens (prayers) for the family," while another one wrote, "Heartfelt sorrow for the victim. I remember how I changed when I had my first child. I became a person willing to kill to protect my child. How did this go so wrong?"
The coroner's office said that autopsies will be conducted on Wednesday, October 19 to determine the cause and manner of death. Efforts to call friends and family have been unsuccessful.
