'Little Fires Everywhere' finale makes fans wish Reese Witherspoon's Elena 'died in that fire'
Spoilers for finale Episode 8
'Little Fires Everywhere' just began airing its finale on Hulu, and even though it's s midnight drop, it opened to a sea storm of hatred towards Elena Richardson, who couldn't have sunk lower than she does in the grand ending of the debut season.
It's hard to hate on a Reese Witherspoon character, as even in all her beauteous and entitled glory as Elle Woods, she was unputdownable. So is the case with Witherspoon's racist, entitled, conniving avatar on the show adapted from Celeste Ng's book of the same name.
While some have touted book-Elena is way more horrid, the on-screen one manages to get on people's nerves just as well. So much so that fans are now hoping she had died in that house-fire which the plot leads up to and are applauding her husband Bill for pretty much calling her out.
On the eighth and final episode, it all becomes clear who started the fire that burns the Richardson mansion down. But if you follow the series closely from the start, it has been Elena all along, lighting little fires here and there to ruin people's lives just to be convinced of her own righteousness.
The holier than thou attitude of hers drives both Mia Warren and Pearl out of town, and in the end, spews sheer spite and venom at her youngest daughter Izzy as Elena goes from cutting her out of family Christmas photos and even telling her explicitly that she never wanted her in the first place.
Elena even tells Pearl her mother's secrets and her father's truth while trying to chastise Mia for Pearl getting the abortion which Lexie actually did, and later, getting into a screaming duel with Lexie about how perfect her Yale-bound daughter who steals essays and uses fake names for abortions, is.
After all that's said and done, when the cops arrive to investigate the fire, Elena, distressed and unraveled, claims she sets the fire; but if you ask fans, they hope the fire took her out instead.
"Girl I’m sorry I wish Elena died in that fire," a blunt fan shared on Twitter. Another chimed in saying "Boy Elena takes the f**king cake! A real piece work" and a third quipped: "Elena is the original Karen that we all love to hate."
Elena's inherent racism managed to get on fans' nerves too, especially when she expressed shock that a black guy would break up with her white daughter, and claimed when said daughter goes off to college, she would find herself a "better fit".
Noting all of that, a fan opened the conversation of Elena's abhorrent racism, citing: "The way Elena said he broke up with you with such disdain like a black boy from a regular family broke up with my rich white daughter HOW DARE HE. Yes b***h he did!"
Another simply sighed: "'A better fit' — really? Elena’s racism doesn’t cease to amaze me." When it comes to all of her self righteous judgment on what's right and wrong, a fan pointed out: "Elena really asks if Bebe wanted the baby when she doesn't even want her 14-year-old GIRL BYE."
From "asserts a whole other level of white privilege" to "her meddling only makes things worse", fans have been out and about, not shying away at all when it comes to dragging Elena after the finale.
Guess their only respite came from the fact that "Elena thinks she's taking Pearl away from Mia, meanwhile, Mia's taking Izzy without even trying."
At the end of the finale, Izzy runs away from home after Elena's crude words; she knows Mia and Pearl have left town, and even though she wishes they had asked her to come along, she can be seen on a bus, off to somewhere away from her own mom.
What's more satisfying? "First Izzy, then bill & now Mia. I love to see it. DRAG ELENA EVERY CHANCE YALL! Lmaoooo," as a fan claims.
But another fan pointed out something nobody could've seen coming. What if it is Izzy's outrage that resulted in her trying to douse her bedroom in gasoline was planned with Mia?
"A conversation between Mia and Izzie — is this how it starts? Is this how they start planning the arson? I have a feeling that they planned to start the fire in the Richardson house. They both have a strong and shared motive — hating Elena."
What do you think? Was Izzy's outrage planned? Let us know in the comments! 'Little Fires Everywhere' finale aired on Wednesday, April 22, on Hulu
