Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter raised eyebrows as she accused former President Donald J Trump of "betraying" his base and being "abjectly stupid" over not finishing the southern border wall construction during his tenure.

Coulter was once a Trump megafan, having written the bestseller 'In Trump We Trust, E Pluribus Awesome!' in the lead up to his 2016 presidential election. However, over the years, she became disillusioned with the former president. On November 5, during a Friday appearance on Andrew Sullivan's Dishcast, Coulter said she knew Trump's character before he was elected but supported him nonetheless because of his pledge to strengthen immigration policies and build the wall on the US border with Mexico.

"I was well familiar with what a narcissistic, ridiculous, tacky, vulgar, arriviste this guy was," she told Sullivan. "That I knew about. The one thing I underestimated, in fact, did not see at all is, I had no idea how abjectly stupid the man is." She accused Trump of "not keeping his promises" and "directly betraying his base," who were "Americans waiting their whole lives for someone to care about them."

Coulter recalled that journalists would tell her prior to the 2016 election that Trump's "not really going to build the wall." At the time, she would laugh in response. "I'd laugh and say, 'No the one thing he's got to do is build the wall.' My theory was if he doesn't build the wall, he loses reelection. He didn't build the wall, he lost reelection," she said. "I just couldn't imagine anyone could be so stupid to run on one thing and just not do it."

Liberals on social media were shocked to find themselves agreeing with the conservative pundit. "Even a broken racist can be right twice a day...or at least once in a while as is the case with Ann Coulter here," liberal reporter Wajahat Ali tweeted.

"When I agree with Ann Coulter, hell has finally frozen over," one user tweeted. "I never thought I’d see the day that Ann Coulter became just another tool of the fake news left but I guess today is that day, unfortunately! Who Agrees?" another wrote. "Sucks to have to agree with Ann Coulter about anything, but this seems spot-on," a comment read.

"This is the only thing in my memory that Ann Coulter ever said that I agree with. However, this is how I would describe her as well. She has somehow made her living making stupid, bombastic potshots at anyone left of her," a user wrote. "I do not agree with Ann Coulter 99.9999% of the time. BUT this is that 0.0001% times I agree with her. Excellent description of Donald Trump," another chimed in.

Coulter's criticism of Trump only grew stronger during the course of his presidency and after he left office. In 2018, she attacked Trump for going against his then-attorney general, Jeff Sessions. According to her, he was the "one person" in his administration "who did anything about immigration."

In May 2020, she described Trump as "the most disloyal actual retard that has ever set foot in the Oval Office" after the 45th POTUS called for Alabama voters to "not trust Jeff Sessions" and instead back his Senate seat challenger, Tommy Tuberville. Coulter also blasted Trump for seeking Space Force funding instead of focusing on building the barrier along the southern border. "Instead of building a wall to protect this country, at least maybe we'll be able to go settle a new planet," Coulter said. Trump, however, dismissed her as a "wacky nut job" and declared, "I am winning on the border."
