LOS ANGLES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA: Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has reportedly suspended the lead prosecutor who tried Hannah Tubbs, a trans woman found guilty of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl. The lead prosecutor's lawyer believes that the suspension may have been implemented to "frighten other DAs" away from speaking out in public.

Shea Sanna, the deputy district attorney, and lead prosecutor in the Tubbs case was suspended after he claimed that Tubbs, a 26-year-old convicted child molester, was attempting to use her gender identity to influence the justice system as evidenced by phone calls made from prison, according to sources speaking to Fox News. In 2014, Tubbs, who was 17 at the time, sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl in a Palmdale Denny's restroom. She was sentenced to two years in a juvenile treatment facility for the 2014 crime because Gascón did not file a motion to have the case transferred to adult court. The brief sentence sparked a great deal of debate as it undoubtedly infuriated a lot of people. Furthermore, Tubbs reportedly began identifying as a woman after being arrested, according to Fox News.

'I see it also unfair to try him as a woman'

The lead prosecutor initially tasked with the case, Sanna, vehemently contended that Tubbs ought to have been tried as an adult and criticized Gascón for being soft on crime. Judge Mario Barrera repeatedly stated throughout the hearing in January 2022 that he could only impose a two-year sentence on Tubbs because Gascón's office had not requested for the case to be moved to adult court.

Sanna exploded after the hearing, "You have a violent sexual predator sentenced to two years in a juvenile facility," according to New York Post. The district attorney was subsequently forced to admit that the sentence in the child molestation case was too soft after Tubbs allegedly bragged about having gotten off easy and made disparaging remarks about the young victim while in custody.

The victim of Tubbs, who is now an adult, had also denounced Gascón as she claimed the lenient sentence was unfair. She said, "I've also heard that my attacker goes by she/them pronouns now. I see it also unfair to try him as a woman as well, seeing how he clearly didn't act like one on January 1st of 2014," according to Fox News.

Why is DA George Gascón suspending Shea Sanna?

LA Times reported that Sanna was the subject of an internal probe that started in August 2022. Greg Smith, the lead prosecutor's attorney at the time, stated that allegations that the deputy district attorney had misused county funds, divulged personal information, and made improper public statements were what initially sparked the investigation.

Uncertain of whether the Tubbs case was a factor in the probe, Smith voiced worry that his client was being penalized for criticizing Gascón. He stated, "My concern is they may be using him as an example to frighten other DAs from coming forward and publicly making statements that are negative to Gascón," according to LA Times.
