Who is Kimberly Newman?

The science instructor from Desert Willow Fine Arts, Science, and Technology Magnet Academy, went on a Zoom call with Katura Stokes and her 12-year-old son after Stokes had reached out to educators, claiming her son was struggling to adjust to online classes. Newman was supposed to help Stokes and her son overcome his educational issues, but she forgot to exit the Zoom call after their chat.

In the continued video recording of the call, Newman can be heard telling someone that she believes Stokes has been avoiding communication with the school and has no intention of helping her son with his classwork. She says: "She [Stokes] answered her phone for the first time the entire year. I mean, these parents, that's what kind of pieces of s**t they are. They're black. She's black. They're a black family." Newman also alludes later in the clip that the 12-year-old boy has been taught to 'lie and make excuses that nothing is his fault'. In the half-hour-long tirade, she also claims "This is what Black people do. White people do it too, but black people do it way more."

Newman's resignation and possible lawsuit

A little over two months after the incident, Stokes has finally filed a damage claim against the Palmdale School District of California citing the video recording of her and her son's Zoom call with Newman. The Orange County Register reveals the damage will expectedly lead to a lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Newman has since resigned from Desert Willow Fine Arts, Science and Technology Magnet Academy. She has also deactivated all of her social media accounts. Stokes, who is being represented by Neil Gehlawat and John Taylor of Ring Taylor attorneys. , claims she recorded the incident on her phone because she wasn't sure anybody would believe the outrageous claims. "The horrible comments the teacher made in the video are truly heartbreaking for a mother to hear and for her young son to hear," Taylor told The Orange County Register. "It's unthinkable that an educator would mock and belittle this family, and there is no doubt that this incident has scarred them. All children are entitled to receive an educational experience free of discrimination, and this video has demonstrated what minority students often face behind the scenes today."
