MOSCOW, IDAHO: A former FBI profiler has reportedly said that the theory about University of Idaho student Kaylee Goncalves being the killer's target may not be true. The murders of the four University of Idaho students have shaken the collective conscience of the community. In the early morning hours of November 13, 2022, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death in an off-campus three-story rented home. Law enforcement is yet to identify the suspect(s) in the case. Authorities have said that the gory scene where the students were killed was the “worst they’ve ever seen."

Speaking of speciations around Goncalves being the target, Gregg McCrary, a former FBI profiler, said, "We have to be careful that we don't overinterpret the information." Goncalves’ injuries were “significantly more brutal” than the other victims, according to NewsNation’s Brian Entin. Her parents have also claimed the way Mogen and she were killed on November 13 "don’t match".

McCrary explained that there were multiple cases where it was found that the victim subjected to the most violence was not the target, according to NewsNation. "It was the person who had put up the most resistance and enraged the killer, so...the killer inflicted more wounds on that person, even though that person wasn't specifically targeted," he said.

"So we could be dealing with anything like that. So it's important not to get tunnel vision on a given hypothesis, important to have multiple competing hypotheses and then let the evidence sort that out and support one and maybe dismiss the other," the former FBI profiler added.

Social media discussed the fact that the killer may have been "enraged" after Goncalves put up a fight. "Yes, fair to say the killer was enraged by something, real or perceived." one user wrote on Reddit. "Jealous, enraged, loner incel. How do you locate such men and how do you get DNA, fingerprints, and interviews? Thoughts?" another user said.

"Or he was already mentally unstable… ?" one user suggested, to which another responded, "He would have to be. No normal people do this. But it’s definitely both personal and being mentally unstable. I wanna put my money on the fact that he’s probably an ahole to a lot of women he encounters, and is constantly angry/rejected."
