Kate Middleton's Noughties outfits are making a comeback as teens copy her pre-royal 'lewks' on social media
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Catherine, Princess of Wales, has become a fashion icon for a new generation as her early 2000s ensembles have recently become a social media craze for teenagers on TikTok. "Kate Middleton drops," or collections of apparel inspired by the royal's Noughties outfits, have been popular on vintage fashion apps that sell vintage or second-hand goods, such as Depop and Vinted.
On the social networking platform, photos of Kate with the caption "before she became a royal" have become popular. "Why is no one talking about how elite Kate's style was in the 2000s?" Another TikTok user wrote, "Once a fashion icon, always a fashion icon." while another commented, "She’s literally everything I want to be".
A few devoted app users have also started dressing up exactly like Kate and trying to mimic some of her previous looks. Her "iconic roller skating dress," in which she was spotted wearing a glittering green top and yellow shorts with bright pink socks and a matching handbag, is a look that has since gained popularity. At the time, photographers captured images of her enjoying a good time with her friends at a roller skating rink while struggling to learn how to skate.
Another outfit that has gained popularity is Kate's university outfit, which often consists of knee-high boots, a shirt and a skirt with a belt in a neutral or dark color. One person said in their video, "Today we're going to dress like Kate Middleton, so let's go, I am not a big fan of Kate's looks now, but I like her older ones before she became [a] princess."
Another one of her looks comprises beige pants, a knitted cap and a patterned jumper for "going to a polo match," a black skirt and a sequined top for "clubbing with the girls," and a black dress with a belt and knee-high boots for "a date with a boy named William."
The Princess of Wales' early 2000s wardrobe is no longer available on the high street, but teenagers who want to recreate her style are increasingly drawn to antique and used apparel stores. One vintage vendor on Depop has produced a "Kate Middleton drop" that costs $33 and includes a "very adorable plaid skirt" as well as a pair of yellow shorts to imitate the "roller skating costume." Another promoted low-waisted Diesel jeans by using images of the royal to show off "Kate Middleton's favorite jeans of the 2000s."
