A controversial old tweet published by the incoming White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is making headlines now, after her high profile appointment. Jean-Pierre had claimed in her tweet that Republican Brian Kemp stole the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election from Democrat Stacey Abrams. The tweet went live from her account on April 2, 2020.

This two-year tweet resurfaced on Monday, May 9, right after media outlets had expressed concern about a 'conflict of interest' as Jean-Pierre's wife is CNN correspondent Suzanne Malveaux . The old tweet has a link to a story that revolves around Kemp's reaction to COVID-19 and reads, "Reminder: Brian Kemp stole the gubernatorial election from Georgians and Stacey Abrams."

Abrams accused Kemp, the secretary of Georgia at that point in time, of using his post in his position as the Peach State's election officer to suppress Democratic totals and purged the rolls of eligible voters. However, despite the claims Abrams made, the turnout in the election was higher than the historical average. A group of conservative voices called out Jean-Pierre for the tweet.

Kelly Loeffler, who lost her Senate seat to Democrat Raphael Warnock during the special election held in January 2021 reacted on Twitter. She said, "Biden’s incoming Press Secretary falsely claimed the 2018 Georgia governor’s election was stolen from Stacey Abrams. Will the media label this as an attack on our Democracy?"

Mollie Hemingway, the editor in chief of The Fedaralist, said that Jean-Pierre's comments have reflected the collective feelings of a large chunk of Democrats. She said, "If questioning the results of elections were a crime, pretty much the entire Democrat Party and the entire media complex would be in prison."

Diamond and Silk, host of a Newsmax show, called on Jean-Pierre to come clean about the election by saying, "Please stop telling a damn lie. Stacey Abrams Lost!", Abrams and her supporters had filed a federal lawsuit over Georgia's management of elections. The trial over this lawsuit began last month.

The current Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, is of the opinion that this lawsuit is just an attempt to undermine the integrity and authenticity of Georgia elections. Raffensperger said, "Almost all of Abrams’ claims have already been dismissed, and the remaining ones are nowhere close to what she alleged in her non-concession speech. Her three-year ‘stolen election’ campaign has been nothing more than a political stunt to keep her in the national spotlight, and it’s a disservice to voters." Kemp and Abrams are favored to square off in a gubernatiorial rematch later in 2022.
