When it was rumored that Vice President Kamala Harris would be traveling to Europe, the internet was worried her penchant for laughing and smiling would cause trouble. Almost like clockwork, that has happened. During a press conference in Poland, Harris broke into a laugh when quizzed about the crisis, inviting anger from a former press secretary of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On March 4, the White House confirmed Harris would travel to Poland and Romania, in order to meet the leaders of the two nations and reassure them of US support. It was widely seen as part of a wider effort to get the VP involved in the crisis, which has so far not gone smoothly. On March 1, Harris went on a radio show to explain the war and ended up being brutally trolled for her simple breakdown.

The backlash extended internationally after Harris' awkward laugh when asked about the humanitarian crisis created by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The incident occurred during a joint press conference alongside Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw. It was far from the only time Harris laughed during the presser thought.

Harris' giggles infuriate ex-press sec

Harris appeared alongside Duda on March 10 to address several issues but appeared unable to contain her giggles. Not only did she laugh off questions about the refugee crisis, but she also dodged other ones on the failed deal to send fighter jets to Ukraine. Specifically, when asked about the refugee crisis, Harris responded, "a friend in need is a friend indeed," while giggling, before turning to Duda to answer the question.

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson immediately picked up on that, and tweeted, "Only Kamala Harris would find it appropriate to laugh when talking about the topic of Ukrainian Refugees." Noticeably, even the Polish President breaks out into a smile and laughs which Johnson seemed to ignore. Harris' laugh was also picked up by many others, who went on to slam her such as Ukrainian-born Republican Representative Victoria Spartz, and former Donald Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos.

Amongst those who tweeted their anger was Iuliia Mendel, who was Zelenskyy's press secretary between 2019 and 2021. Not holding anything back, Medel tweeted, "It would be a tragedy if this woman won the presidency," before shortly deleting that tweet. Even though it was up for only a short time, it encapsulated the feelings many have towards Harris' ability to break into laughter. More worryingly for the US, Mendel is one of the first high-profile foreign Twitter accounts to specifically call Harris out.

Giggling aside, Harris did manage to get some important information out to the world. During the presser, she promised more than $50 million more in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. She did, however, dodge the question of fighter jets, which the Polish President briefly addressed with "We are trying to do our best." Duda also confirmed he had asked Harris to speed up the US' consular process for Ukrainian refugees, as more and more spill into Poland and other European nations every day. It is reported that at least 2.2 million have fled Ukraine to date, with Poland housing more than half of them.
