Vice President Kamala Harris was trolled on social media after she appeared to put on a French accent to speak to scientists at a Covid lab in Paris while she was on a tour to mend US-France relationship.

On Tuesday, November 9, Harris visited Institut Pasteur science lab, where her Indian-born mother researched breast cancer. It was also a facility where Americans are trying to tackle Covid-19 hand-in-hand with their European counterparts.

There the vice president express disappointment at how politics was not scientific and logical like the experiments being conducted in the lab by the scientists. "In government, we campaign with 'The Plan,'" Harris said, in what was perceived by many as a French accent. "Uppercase T, uppercase P, 'The Plan! And then the environment is such we're expected to defend 'The Plan' even when the first time we roll it out there may be some glitches and it's time to reevaluate and then do it again."

'Vice President Harris is more than embarrassing on the world stage'

The five-day trip to France by the VP is an attempt to undo some of the damage caused by a series of blunders made by the White House in its dealings with the French, especially the snub on the nuclear submarine deal with Australia. Harris had previously moved to Montreal, Canada, when she was 12 and attended a French-speaking school for several years. However, her French accent did not earn any brownie points, especially among conservatives.

Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump's secretary of state, said Harris was humiliating the US. "The clip from Vice President Harris is more than embarrassing on the world stage," he told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Wednesday night. "Our adversaries watch that and see weakness. They see people who aren't serious, they see people who aren't determined - precisely the opposite of what we did for four years."

Republican researcher Jake Schneider tweeted the clip, saying: "Kamala 'Cringe' Harris visits a group of French scientists and speaks to them as if they're toddlers, lamenting that people expect their elected officials to keep their promises."

Abigail Marone, the press secretary for Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, tweeted: "Is she using a FRENCH ACCENT?! I love this episode of Veep." Becket Adams, a commentator with the Washington Examiner, joked: "I thought we cancelled pepe lepew." TV commentator Joe Concha said: "There really are no words anymore… #AuRevoir"

Soon others joined in the criticism. "Hard to watch. Can we not do better in picking our leaders in America with a population of 335 million? Sad, sad, sad," One of them said, while another noted, "I’m still amazed how she got picked to be VP. Someone list her qualifications so I can understand."

A third added, "Wow. And she wonders why her approval rating is in the 20’s. Rotflmao." The next remarked, "It’s like watching Ricky Bobby and Jean Girard but far less funny." A commenter tweeted, "But did she have to use C-3PO hands? When we elect someone, we have every right to expect them to represent us in a favorable light."
