Lugo passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021, just a day before his 46th birthday. The cause of his death is presumed to be a heart attack. He is survived by his wife Surki Lugo and his four children.
Lugo started his career with the Astros in 1994, when he was drafted out of Connors State College in Oklahoma. Before joining the Red Sox in 2007, he also had brief stints with the Rays and Dodgers. The Brooklyn native played 12 seasons in MLB with the three teams, even winning the World Series in 2007 with the Red Sox. In that year, he had a brilliant record of .237 with 73 RBI and 135 hits. Later in 2009, Lugo was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. His combined hit across 88 games that year with two teams came to .280. Post his 2011 stint with Atlanta Braves, Lugo became a free agent and played with Cleveland Indians and Peoria Explorers. He officially retired in 2011 but continued to play with leagues other than MLB.

Who is Julio Lugo's wife?
The news of Julio Lugo's untimely death was confirmed by his family to ESPN reporter Enrique Rojas. "Julio Lugo's family told me of the death of the former MLB player, presumably due to a heart attack. Lugo was 45 years old. #RIP," Rojas tweeted.
Lugo was married to Surki Lugo, who happened to be his second wife. The couple preferred to keep their family life private and the exact timeline of their relationship is not clearly known. Reportedly, the two tied the knot in 2007 at the Primada Cathedral of America in the Dominican Republic. The two were parents to four children together, three sons and one daughter.
Lugo was previously married to Mabel Lugo, who accused him of domestic assault in 2003. The MLB player allegedly assaulted his wife after his team Houston Astros suffered an 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. He was charged with a count of misdemeanor assault which mandated a one-year prison term and a fine of $4000. Mabel Lugo, however, defended Julio later, saying that he did not harm her intentionally. The present whereabouts of Mabel Lugo are not known and she has also not released any statement regarding his death.
