Joshua Goncalves-Radding: NY man, 20, indicted for crashing vehicle and killing 4 students in 2022
CASTINE, MAINE: A 20-year-old man from North Babylon, New York, named Joshua Goncalves-Radding, has been indicted on multiple charges related to a car crash that killed four students and injured three others at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.
According to Maine State Police, Goncalves-Radding has been charged with four counts of manslaughter, five counts of aggravated operating under the influence, two counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, three counts of driving to endanger, and one count each of criminal speed, forgery, and unlawful use of a license, NBC 10 reported.

The fatal accident occurred on December 10, 2022, when Goncalves-Radding's Range Rover crashed into a tree and caught fire, resulting in the deaths of Brian Kenealy, 20, of York, Maine; Chase Fossett, 21, of Gardiner, Maine; Luke Simpson, 22, of Rockport, Massachusetts; and Riley Ignacio-Cameron, 20, of Aquinnah, Massachusetts. The three surviving passengers were Noelle Tavares, 20, of North Falmouth, Massachusetts; Dominick Gecoya, 20, of Middleton, Massachusetts; and Goncalves-Radding himself.
The Maine Maritime Academy is a four-year college that specializes in maritime training and has a small, tight-knit community. The tragedy had hit the school and the Castine community hard. "I am devastated to confirm that today Maine Maritime Academy lost four of our students in a single vehicle," Maine Maritime Academy President Jerry S Paul said in a statement soon after the tragedy. "Our community is grieving for these young lives and for their families. While we have lost beloved members of our student body, tonight there are four families who have lost their children."

After conducting an extensive investigation, state police determined that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. Goncalves-Radding is expected to be formally charged at a later date. In a statement released by the Maine State Police cited by the outlet, they expressed their condolences and acknowledged the impact of the crash on those affected.
"The Maine State Police recognizes the significant impact this crash has had on the Maine Maritime Academy, the community, and friends and family of those who was injured and killed. Our thoughts remain with all those who have been greatly impacted by this enormous loss."
The News Center Maine, Shore Road has to be closed for more than eight hours following the fatal crash. Police at the time had not revealed why the SUV had left the highway.
