Internet reacts as Jan 6 cops snub Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy at Congressional Gold Medal ceremony
WASHINGTON, DC: Law enforcement officers, who defended the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, from the brutal attack by supporters of then-president Donald Trump and their families refused to shake the hands of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) while accepting Congressional Gold Medal award at Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. Footages showed recipients shaking hands with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) but not McConnell and McCarthy.
Commenting on it, Gladys Sicknick, mother of fallen officer Brian Sicknick, said, "They’re just two-faced. I’m just tired of them standing there and saying how wonderful the Capitol police is and then they turn around and … go down to Mar-a-Lago and kiss his [Trump] ring and come back and stand here and sit with – it just, it just hurts,” according to CNN. Internet too was quick to react after videos of the event started making the rounds. One social media user said, "This is the perfect example of 'actions speak louder than words.'"

Many continued to praise the move with an individual saying, "This says it all. They had a responsibility to stand up to Trump to stop the attack before January 6th." Another wrote, "Good. McConnell and McCarthy don't deserve their handshakes." One more said, "Snub for previous snub. Seems appropriate."

"And kudos for those heroes having the gumption to recognize who deserved to be thanked," wrote a person. While another said, "Straight up savages! I love them for this!"

Following the snub, McConnell was later asked about the incident. He said, “I would respond by saying today we gave the gold medal to the heroes of January 6. We admire and respect them. They laid their lives on the line and that’s why we gave a gold medal today to the heroes of January 6.”
