FARMINGTON, UTAH: The shooting of Chase Allan might be getting investigated by a far-right group helmed by Ammon Bundy, the anti-government activist who was indicted and later acquitted for leading the armed occupation of Oregon’s Malheur Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Allan, 25, was fatally shot 12 times by five Farmington police officers during a traffic stop on March 1, 2023, after being pulled over for an “illegitimate license plate.” Dr Christine Sarteschi, LCSW, an Associate Professor of Social Work and Criminology, shared a screenshot and wrote on Twitter, "Ammon Bundy's People's Right Network looking into the Chase Allan death."

Allan’s acquaintances claim he had ties with People's Rights, according to The Daily Beast. On Sunday, March 12, mourners gathered at the vigil for Allan the right-wing group promoted. As per the report, several speakers at the vigil had previously been listed as the People’s Rights movement's associates. Speaker June Reese, who was listed as a point person for a controversial county commission meeting on an October 2021 People’s Rights memo, said, "He [Allan] was doing the best he could to love everyone and to help us keep those freedoms alive.” Victoria Dortzbach, a People’s Rights organizer in Utah 3 district, described Allan as a gentle person and said, “It’s beyond fathomable what just happened.”

Chase Allan death update: 25-yr-old was previously accused of 'resisting' officers in court

Following Allan's death, his family released a statement that read, as per KUTV, "He was 25 years old and had graduated from Utah State University. He was always selflessly helping and protecting others in need. He has been studying law the last few years and was a patriot doing what he could to defend the people’s freedom and liberty in his community." The statement added, "We have learned more from media coverage about what occurred than anywhere else right now. Officers claim it was a routine traffic stop, yet the officer requested multiple other officers to the scene a couple blocks prior to the stop. This resulted in the brutal murder of Chase at the hands of 5 Farmington Police officers, with them shooting him while he was still in his automobile and likely terrified for his safety. They shot 12 plus rounds at him while he was still inside the car with the engine running and lights on when reporters arrived."

Who is Ammon Bundy?

Bundy is the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who grazed his cattle on federal land without paying the requisite fees and in 2014 engaged in an armed showdown with the federal Bureau of Land Management. Bundy announced in June 2022 that he was running for Idaho governor as a Republican, reports CNN. He said in a campaign-announcement video, "I'm running for governor because I'm sick and tired of all of this political garbage just like you are." However, he was defeated by Brad Little, who won the nomination on November 8, 2022, Idaho Statesman reported.

Bundy started People's Rights in 2020. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the group started in Idaho, one of the least-vaccinated states with only 43 percent of its population fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as per USA Today. As per the 2021 report, the group has activists in about 38 states.

Bundy's history of hostility toward government

In 2016, Bundy led an armed group in the takeover and occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, in eastern Oregon, according to Business Insider. Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward said at the time, "After the peaceful rally was completed today, a group of outside militants drove to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, where they seized and occupied the refuge headquarters. A collective effort from multiple agencies is currently working on a solution," as per Oregon Live. According to the outlet, Bundy posted a video on his Facebook and called on people from across the country to report to the refuge with their weapons. He said, "We went to the local communities and presented it many times and to many different people. They were not strong enough to make the stand. So many individuals across the United States and in Oregon are making this stand. We hope they will grab onto this and realize that it's been happening."
