KIAWAH ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA: Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley recently came under scrutiny after wearing an off-white dress to her daughter’s wedding ceremony. The politician took to Twitter to share a photo of her family from the event and was seen posing alongside her husband Michael, son Nalin, daughter Rena, and new son-in-law, Josh.

While several of Haley’s followers dropped congratulatory messages for Rena and her husband, the former’s dress garnered a majority of the attention. “We had the sweetest weekend celebrating Rena and Josh. Thankful for our sweet family and friends who joined us in supporting and celebrating them. Rena and Josh, we could not be more proud of both of you! #AndThenThereWere5 #JourneyToJackson2023” Haley wrote in her post. Other images of Haley’s dress were also shared elsewhere on social media, the Daily Mail reported. The former South Carolina governor’s dress comprised of a sleeveless, one-shoulder, floor-length, off-white gown with a decorative draping on one side.

‘Why are you basically wearing white?’

Several social media users called out Haley for wearing it to her daughter’s wedding. “Why are you dressed like a bride at your daughter's wedding?????” one user asked. “Did the mother of the bride wear WHITE” commented another. “Why are you basically wearing white and gripping the groom? Creepy,” wrote a third user. One user asked, “Who wears white/ivory to a wedding when they are not the bride?” while another said, “Which is the bride? You can’t tell by this photo.”

‘Beautiful family and beautiful dresses’

Despite the criticism surrounding Haley’s off-white dress at her daughter’s wedding, some users came to the politician’s defense. “I don’t see a veil on her head & she is wearing a champagne-colored dress, not white. I’m guessing her daughter was with her when she picked it out, just like I was with my mom when she picked out her mother’s dress. Why would you make this comment? It’s just weird & classless,” one argued. “Ok, yes your daughter looks gorgeous but can we please talk about YOUR dress?? It is stunning & you look stunning. I want to find an event to go to where I could wear it,” another added. “Beautiful family and beautiful dresses. Congrats and best wishes to the happy couple!” a third user commented.

Wedding took place at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Nikki Haley’s daughter’s wedding took place on April 15 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, as per Insider. On the morning of the ceremony, Haley took to social media to share her excitement over her daughter’s special day. “As parents you pray your children will find that special someone to go through life with. The day is here and we couldn't be more excited for our daughter and future son. As we start this special day, our hearts are full knowing this is the day the Lord has made,” the GOP presidential hopeful wrote. 

During the reception ceremony, a Clemson Tigers mascot took to the dance floor in reference to the college Rena and her husband attended, the publication noted. The newlyweds reportedly made their exit from the wedding venue in a vintage white Cadillac. Haley’s daughter majored in nursing and minored in psychology at Clemson University and currently works as a pediatric nurse in South Carolina.

Meanwhile, her new son-in-law is a math teacher and high school football coach who played on Clemson's college football team. Rena and Joshua got engaged in July after more than three years of dating. The couple stood with Haley when she her candidacy for president in February.
