'I'm Nikki Haley and I'm running for president': First female US governor makes her bid for 2024 race
WASHINGTON, DC: Nikki Haley has become the first Republican to challenge former President Donald Trump for the GOP ticket. The former governor of South Carolina and US ambassador to the United Nations announced her presidential run on Tuesday, February 14. In her online video post, Haley stressed highlighted on "it's time for a new generation of leadership."
Nikki’s parents are Indian immigrants and the Republican is a Bamberg, South Carolina native. She had already made history in her short political career, becoming the state's first female governor and the first Indian-American to lead the state.
Haley, in her announcement for the top job, hit out at the party’s recent poor performance where the Republicans lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight elections. Interestingly, Trump has encouraged Haley with her bid, suggesting to “follow her heart,” and on another side, Taylor Budowich, head of the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. super PAC, hit out and labeled her as "just another career politician," reports CBS News. "She started out as a Never Trumper before resigning to serve in the Trump [administration]. She then resigned early to go rake in money on corporate boards, he said in a statement. “Now, she's telling us she represents a 'new generation.' Sure just looks like more of the same, a career politician whose only fulfilled commitment is to herself."
