Indiana dad battling cancer fatally shoots wife and children before killing himself in triple murder-suicide
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA: A father who was reportedly suffering from cancer allegedly murdered his wife and two children before killing himself. The tragic incident happened in Bloomington on Sunday, September 6, when Jeffrey Mumper fatally shot Annamarie Greta Mumper, his daughter Emma Mumper and son Jakob Mumper before turning the gun on himself.
According to reports, the Bloomington Police Department arrived at a home in the 2600 block of S. Olcott Blvd. at around 10:20 in the morning. They went there for a welfare check on the house members after getting a complaint from a woman. The woman told police that when she went to the Mumpers’ home to pick up her friend, no one responded to the door after she knocked. She said that she then used a key to get access inside the house and found her friend, who did not seem alive in a room. The woman said she left the place and called 911.
When police officers responded to the scene, they discovered four bodies dead from apparent gunshot wounds. They said that crime scene evidence “indicated that a 61-year-old man had shot and killed his 54-year-old wife, his 26-year-old daughter, and his 18-year-old son before shooting himself.” The investigation continues as autopsy results are awaiting. Police have also not yet released the motive behind the shooting.
Meanwhile, friends of the family said the father, who earlier fought prostate cancer, was now suffering from pancreatic cancer. Reports also stated that Emma was doing her graduation from Stony Brook University in New York while Jakob was a star swimmer at Bloomington North High School. "Those were my records from when I went through. So, to have coached someone who's now better than me, that's kind of what you really want as a coach. So, it's a tough loss on so many levels, the athletics being one of the lesser levels for sure,” Bloomington High School North boys swimming coach Max Irwin told news station WTHR.
One of the friends of Jakob, Kristina Paegle, said, “Even like thinking about it I'm shaking.” While another friend, Delani Fisher, added: “My stomach hasn't stopped hurting. I think it's worse that it's not like a natural cause."
Another friend of the young man, named Will Renn, who left a picture of his friend, a note, and a toy car on the windshield of his car, said: “We love him, and we want all of the people who really care about him and all that...we know that he has a place in their heart. He will fly because of them." Joe T. who knew Jakob’s family well and came to his place on Friday, September 4, stated, “I felt they were like my second parents, to be honest. I loved his dad. I loved his mom. His mom was actually trying to become a teacher. So, she drove a school bus to become a teacher."
In another incident, a dad was given a life sentence in May for killing his two kids as he wanted to get revenge from their mother. Laurent F forced the children to swallow building foam that stopped them from breathing and also tried to kill his wife for leaving the family home.
