LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The struggle and remorse that accompany the loss of a loved one often restricts those left behind from moving on, and Netflix's latest Turkish film, 'In Good Hands 2', precisely depicts this.

The movie which is the sequel to the 2022 film 'In Good Hands,' is helmed by Ketche and is written by Hakan Bonomo, the same duo behind the first movie.

The sequel centers around Firat (Kaan Urgancioglu) who is dealing with the loss of Melisa (Aslı Enver) and adjusting to his new role as a parent to Can (Mert Ege Ak). Firat drowns his grief in drink, deepening the rift between him and Can.

Can, on the other hand, becomes obsessed with inventing a time machine in a heart-wrenching attempt to meet his mother from the past.

While the film makes a genuine effort at storytelling and character development, it ultimately falls short of presenting a truly fascinating storyline, resulting in an experience that is only okay and nothing out of the ordinary.

Heartwarming performances elevate 'In Good Hands 2'

The performances are the film's main strength as they elevate the mediocre storyline and add a raw and authentic touch to the narrative.

Kaan Urgancioglu portrays Firat with nuance and his mannerisms express a deep depth of sorrow, conveying the raw pain of loss with calm intensity. The interactions between Firat and Can are very heartwarming, demonstrating the tenderness and vulnerability of a father seeking to connect with his bereaved son.

Mert Ege Ak's performance as Can is once again excellent, as he portrays the character with emotional depth. Despite his tender age, Ak portrays Can's sadness and determination with maturity. His passion for the time machine project is both moving and hopeful, demonstrating a child's undying conviction in the impossible.

Melisa Pamuk, as Sezen, is the film's fresh addition, and she delivers a strong performance to complete the key trio. Her portrayal of a woman hardened by self-blame is convincing, and her struggle to recover is understandable.

Hakan Bonomo's script plunges into predictable clichés in 'In Good Hands 2'

Despite its sincerity, Hakan Bonomo's script frequently succumbs to cliches and obvious story points. The film's exploration of loss while well-intentioned, lacks the creativity and depth required to fully connect with the viewers.

With thoughtfully crafted shots and deft use of lighting, Ketche's direction creates visually pleasing settings.

However, the narrative feels rushed at points, such as when Firat, after a heartfelt conversation with his mother, suddenly chooses to alter his ways and releases an apology to school and parents, with Can forgiving him for his disruptive actions the day before at the party, feels rushed.

Although films are a form of fiction, it feels underwhelming when more than half of the film focuses on the protagonist's struggle to accept his predicament.

The conclusions to the characters' arcs are foreseeable, and the aim to end on a positive note is clear; nonetheless, the execution falls slightly short.

'In Good Hands 2' is an okayish sequel that delivers great performances and a genuine exploration of its themes, but it doesn't offer anything new. While not a bad film, it lacks the uniqueness and depth required to stand out in the crowded field of modern dramas.
