TEKIRDAG PROVINCE, TURKEY: On Saturday, August 6, Selcuk Cetiner, 41, allegedly led his partner, Mehlika Derici, 35, to a painful death along with himself. The seemingly happy pair had gone out to dinner hours earlier to celebrate their friend Merve Y's birthday. According to The Sun, post dinner, they made their way to Asiklar Tepesi, often known as Lovers' Hill, a well-known local vantage point.

The group had already been drinking when they headed to the spot, where they continued drinking. However, soon after, a fight broke out between Cetiner and Derici, who worked as a beautician.

The two started fighting allegedly out of jealousy. Cetiner, according to Merve Y and her partner, shoved Derici to the ground before their friends, who were present there, helped her. He was then heard yelling, "If we die, we die together" before grabbing Derici around her waist and jumping off the cliff to the horror of those present. The pair dropped 82ft to their gruesome deaths.

Paramedics arrived at the scene later and took their bodies to Marmara Ereglisi Public hospital. As per reports, Derici was the mother of two children.

Turkey has witnessed a surge in the number of femicides in the nation, most notably since the country quit the Istanbul Convention in July 2021. The Annual Data Report of 2021 by the We Will Stop Femicide platform stated that 280 women had been killed by men in 2021 alone, while 217 more were found dead under suspicious conditions, many cases of which were never deciphered. As of 2022, 246 femicides have been reported by the Monument Counter, which is a digital memorial for women who succumbed to gender-based violence.

The news of Cetiner and Derici comes on the heels of a similar incident involving a British couple. Mary Meyers Keyley pushed her boyfriend Pegram Reece to his death off a 100ft high hotel balcony. She is now serving a life sentence without parole.
