'How I Met Your Father' Episode 10 Finale Review: Sophie's love story has just begun
'How I Met Your Father' is just getting started. When Hulu announced a second season of the hit CBS dramedy's spin-off, and that too for a whopping 20 episodes, there was no doubt that we wouldn't know who Sophie's (Hilary Duff/Kim Cattral) husband would be. After nine episodes of her searching for love in the age of dating apps, Sophie's back to a square one after her love story with Jesse (Chris Lowell) fizzles out but brings back a familiar face from the pilot episode. Plus, some solid easter eggs and a special cameo complete the season.
Moving into the story, Jesse's fast dive into the relationship scares Sophie. It's easy to understand why. They did break up with their partners (in his case, it was a blunt no). For all the talk about taking it slow, they jump right to bed and Sophie's life comes to a standstill when her newfound love mumbles that he loves her in his sleep. She breaks off things pretty quickly, hurting Jesse in the process. When advice comes from a 'HIMYM' alum Cobie Smulders who reprises her role as Robin Scherbatsky.

With Robin offering some sane and relatable advice, Sophie heads back only to see Jesse and his ex, Meredith kissing. It's heartbreak, but in a way, it is her fault for perhaps either choosing the timing wrong or even thinking that she could only expect a one-off night from a guy like Jesse. Remember, this was a dude who was rejected by his ex publicly when he went down on one knee. His realization of Sophie being the woman he loved was a lot earlier than her and that now puts their relationship on pause.
But, 'HIMYF' has a bittersweet ending. Her picture of Jesse is now part of the exhibit, and in the closing moments, she runs into Ian, the marine biologist who calls off their budding romance to pursue his career in Australia. That's pretty much the big twist the dramedy had to offer and at 25-odd minutes, it's still a neat finale. The return of some fan-favorite characters — Smulders, Joe Nieve aka Carl, the bartender along with the Captain and Becky brings back some great memories of the OG show.
Quite simply, this story is just getting started. There's some happy ending alright. Ellen (Tien Tran) gets her job and a new girlfriend. Sid and Hannah marry, while Charlie and Valentina are still rock-solid as a couple. But the Sophie-Jesse and now Ian story takes center stage and makes for a breezy and delightful viewing.
