Cadet Hunter Brown, a lineman on the Air Force Falcons' football team, died after collapsing on way to class

EL PASO COUNTY, COLORADO: Hunter Brown, an offensive lineman for the Air Force Falcons, died Monday morning, January 9, according to the Academy. He was 21 years old.

Brown, who was assigned to Cadet Squadron 16, was from Lake Charles, Louisiana, and was a standout offensive lineman on the Falcons' football team in 2022, said US Air Force Academy chief Lieutenant General Richard M Clark. This year, Air Force finished 10-3, including a 30-15 victory over Baylor in the Armed Forces Bowl in December.

How did Hunter Brown die?

According to the Air Force, a medical emergency struck Brown as he was leaving his dorm to go to class. When first responders arrived on the scene, they attempted to save his life but were unsuccessful. No specific reason of death has been revealed yet. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations are conducting an inquiry.

In a statement released Tuesday, Superintendent Clark said, "Hunter was a standout offensive lineman on the Falcon football team and was well-respected in his squadron. The entire US Air Force Academy mourns his loss, and our hearts and condolences are with his family, his squadron, and all who were touched by this incredible young man."

Brigadier General Paul D Moga, Commandant of Cadets, assembled the cadet wing before classes today. "It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness I share with you that we have lost one of our own," began Moga. "He leaves behind friends, grieving teammates, a grieving cadet wing, and a devastated family." Moga reassured the cadets that they wouldn't have to deal with the loss alone because there was a comprehensive range of support services available for the cadets, teachers, and staff, including Academy chaplains and mental health specialists. Instead of attending morning classes, cadets could choose to use the services.

Air Force Football also shared a tribute and offered condolences for Brown on their Instagram, saying, "We are devasted by the loss of our teammate, brother, and friend. Hunter was an incredible young man, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with his family, friends, teammates, and our staff who were all fortunate to know him and be a part of his life. Rest in peace, Hunter Brown."

Troy Calhoun, head football coach, said, "Our players, staff and entire Academy have been so blessed and fortunate to have Hunter as a part of our lives. He was a pure joy to coach and have as a teammate. He was tough, a great worker, and no one unselfishly pulled harder for others than Hunter. His mom and dad, Candyce and Dustin, raised a wonderful son who made each of us a better person. We love our great brother, and our thoughts and prayers are with Hunter's incredible soul and his family." 

Brown was pursuing a degree in management with a minor in French at the Air Force Academy. He attended Barbe High School in Louisiana. "We are heartbroken by the passing of one of our favorite sons," his high school wrote in their Twitter page. "Hunter Brown was a force on and off the field. Please join the Buc Family in prayer for all who loved him."
