Where is Otto Hightower? 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 finale gave us a major hint
Contains spoilers and speculation for 'House of the Dragon'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The finale episode of 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the show's high-octane Season 3, which is expected to include the highly anticipated Dance of Dragons.
Among the numerous unanswered issues in the season finale, one concerns the appearance of Alicent Hightower's (Olivia Cooke) father and former King's Hand Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) in a prison cell.
In Season 2 Spisode 7, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) asked Lord Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) to track down his grandfather Otto, so that he could return to his duties as King's Hand.
However, with his brief appearance in the final episode, many fans are left wondering what may have happened to the former King's Hand that landed him in confinemnet.
What happened to Otto Hightower in 'House of the Dragon' Season 2?
After being fired by Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) in episode 2, Otto resolves to leave King's Landing and go to Oldtown, the Hightowers' primary headquarters. He informs Alicent that the Hightowers still retain power and cites her son Daeron, who may be more open to instruction and potentially help them in the future.
Instead, Alicent persuades Otto to go to Highgarden to ensure that the Tyrells and other lords do not side with their enemies.
This is marked as his last appearance in the season before he is seen in jail in the finale. Throughout the season, Alicent's letters to him go unanswered.
Who is responsible for Otto Hightower's confinement in 'House of the Dragon' Season 2?
Although nothing is known regarding Otto Hightower's captivity, we may conclude that it was most likely caused by wicked Larys Strong, who is renowned for his cunning and manipulative personality; he may have preferred Otto's absence.
Larys often works behind the scenes to manipulate events in his favour. It could be possible that, when Aemond asks Larys to find Otto so he can resume his role as Hand, Larys may perceive an opportunity to exploit the situation to his advantage.
By imprisoning Otto, Larys may remove a formidable adversary, acquire leverage, or create a situation in which his own influence and authority grow. Given his status as a Master of Whisperers, it's possible that Larys organised Otto's capture to further his own goals.
If Aemond charged Larys with finding Otto, it's possible that Larys maneuvered the situation to his benefit, either personally arranging Otto's capture or aiding it in other ways.
