Contains spoilers and speculation for 'House of the Dragon' Season 2
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'House of the Dragon' Season 2 Episode 6 aired on Sunday, July 21, 2024, on HBO.
The gripping episode intensified the storyline of Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) who was injured following a shocking betrayal by his brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell).
Aegon II Targaryen was never the most liked character, and some even argued that his punishment was deserved after he bullied Aemond Targaryen in Episode 3.
However, it's been difficult to watch the downfall of a king who, despite his flaws, was once so irreverent and unabashed in his glory days.
In Episode 6, we see Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) discuss his future with Aegon, while Aemond threatens him with dire consequences if he ever reveals what happened at Rook's Rest.
Here's a look at what happens to Aegon in the future in 'House of the Dragon'
Will Aegon Targaryen ever walk in 'House of the Dragon'?
Aegon never fully recovers from his injuries and remains bent and twisted for the rest of his life, marked by burns all over his body. Despite this, he does manage to reclaim his status and glory as a ruler.
According to George RR Martin's 'Fire and Blood', King's Landing will fall to Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), and Aegon II will escape disguised as a commoner when that happens.
He heads to Dragonstone, where he faces off against Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) and wins the battle. However, his streak of misfortune continues as he sustains severe injuries, shattering his legs.
In Episode 6, Larys Strong advises Aegon not to take Milk of the Poppy or any other medicine. In the books, Aegon heeds this advice and endures the pain without medication, continuing to fight despite his suffering.
He finally gets his chance for revenge on the Blacks when Rhaenyra Targaryen arrives at Dragonstone after the storming of the Dragonpit which forces her to escape King's Landing and arrive at Dragonstone where Aegon feeds her to Sunfyre.
He returns to King's Landing aboard Alyn of Hull's (Abubaker Salim) ship and reclaims his throne. Upon his return, he resumes his brash demeanor and reasserts his authority.
How does Aegon die in 'House of the Dragon'?
Aegon's rule only prolongs the war as he dismisses every possibility of a resolution. His advisors suggest marrying his daughter, Jaehaera, to Rhaenyra's son, Aegon III Targaryen, in a bid for peace. However, he remains determined to eradicate his sister's bloodline.
To end the war, he is poisoned by conspirators, including Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Larys Strong.
His death effectively ends the war, as Aegon III Targaryen ascends to the throne with the support of Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor).
