Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton compared US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to late Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday, September 11. The controversial remark came soon after the Queen's death on September 8, 2022. Clinton compared Pelosi to the Queen claiming both of them "fought" for what they believed in.

"I think Nancy Pelosi is the gutsiest woman in politics right now," Clinton said on CNN's State of the Union. "She has shown, through all kinds of turmoil and challenge, what it means to - somewhat like the Queen to be drawing an analogy here - get up every day, put on those high heels she wears, suit up to fight for the values and ideals that she strongly believes in."

Clinton also recalled the times she met the Queen, who she described as an "engaging and lively conversationalist". "One of my favorite memories is when Bill and I stayed with her and Prince Philip on the Britannia, what used to be the royal yacht, as we commemorated the 50th anniversary of D-Day. So we were in close quarters," she recalled. "The Queen Mother was there. It was just like being with a family that was having a good time together despite the solemnity of the occasion."

Clinton praised the Queen's longstanding "devotion to duty and her sense of obligation to the people of her nation" ever since she took the throne. "But I also saw a more playful and somewhat, you know, funny and very incredibly warm side of her as well," she said.

"Sometimes there would be, you know, a wry exchange about, you know, how as a woman leader, you always have to have your hair done, well, she always looked perfect, unlike some of us," she added. "She had a sense of style that really stayed with her. And so I knew that her sense of who she was and the role she played literally governed her life from every second of it."

'Not even close'

Clinton's comparison of Pelosi with the Queen has drawn criticism on social media. "Really? Never saw her Majesty tear up a speech during the opening of Parliament... With all due respect, not even close," one user wrote on Twitter.

"What a lie. The Queen did not spend her days plotting politics, nor the destruction of others with Black Rod. And if 1% of the number of people who love the Queen even like P, it'll be a miracle," wrote another.

One commented, "Neither Hillary Clinton nor Nancy Pelosi exist in the same that the Queen lived in. These 2 horridly selfish, crooked and incompetent people exist because of corruption in America..."

"Please don’t insult Queen Elizabeth II. She was a dignified, dedicated & admirable leader of the world. Nancy Pelosi has not a single one of those qualities," one user wrote, while another said, "One was a very honest sincere stoic woman that served her people in a very honorable way. The other is a greedy power hungry LIAR! Yea, I don’t see the resemblance!"

"There are a lot of women in politics on both sides of the isle that are strong, honest, wise, and compassionate. Modern feminists who lead with strength and dignity. Nancy Pelosi is not one of them," one user said.
