Senator Ted Cruz has been facing the public's ire in a freezing Texas where the devastating winter storms have left millions of Texans without power or safe drinking water and at least 30 dead in the state. The reason for the backlash is that Cruz left Houston to go to Cancún with his family as the state reeled under a power crisis.

Cruz cut his trip short by two days and returned to Houston on Thursday night, February 18, after receiving backlash from constituents and colleagues for leaving his state while millions of Texans remained in the dark. But even as he’s back in the state, photos and videos published by the New York Post show that the senator’s family was “happily soaking up the Mexican sun” on Friday, February 19. Cruz’s wife, Heidi, was seen on the sand wearing a red bikini under blue beach umbrellas.

Why did Ted Cruz fly to Cancun? The truth behind family text messages and why he blamed his kids for the mistake

The Republican senator at first blamed the trip on his daughters, saying he was only chaperoning them to Mexico. He had initially said in a statement, “Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas.”

Speaking to reporters after his arrival home, he conceded that the trip was “obviously a mistake,” and said he had begun having “second thoughts” as soon as he boarded the plane to Mexico intent on a few days of remote work in the sun. “The plan had been to stay through the weekend with the family,” he said, framing the decision as a parent’s attempt to placate his two daughters, ages ten and 12, after a “tough week.”

“On the one hand, all of us who are parents have a responsibility to take care of our kids, take care of our families. But I also have a responsibility that I take very seriously of fighting for the state of Texas,” said Cruz. “As it became a bigger and bigger firestorm, it became all the more compelling that I needed to come back.”

But his statement has been criticized more in light of other findings. Heidi reportedly bragged about the couple’s Cancun trip saying in a text chain that they were looking to escape the “FREEZING” weather. As per the New York Times, text messages from her to friends and Houston neighbors on Wednesday, February 17, revealed that she proposed a getaway until Sunday, February 21 and invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” noting the room price this week ($309 per night) and its good security.

“Anyone can or want to leave for the week?” she wrote. “We may go to Cancún.” She spoke of a “direct flight” and “hotels w capacity. Seriously.” She also shared details for a Wednesday afternoon departure, a Sunday return trip. When no one appeared interested, she reportedly said, “We have gas stove so at least we can heat water little that there is happy to help anyone we can too.”
