'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16: Theory about major character's death sparks outrage, fans divided between Jackson and Owen

There might be an alumnus returning to 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16, but a bizarre fan theory also teased how the new season could mark the death of a major character.

Officially the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history, 'Grey's Anatomy' is set to unleash its sixteenth season and with it comes a box of emotional outbursts, relationship troubles, and complicated medical cases. From Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Andrew DeLuca's (Giacomo Gianniotti) future to Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Jo Wilson Karev's (Camilla Luddington) rough-patch, there is much to be excited about. 

While this season might see an alumnus return to the show, a bizarre fan theory suggests the new season could also mark the death of a major character. "Ok hear me out... the last time they had a blurry looking background was season 11 when Derek died and all I’m saying is they’re going to kill off someone important in season 16," the tweet read and attracted much attention from hard-core fans.

No sooner did the fan post his theory, a string of reactions popped up. "Please no and someone better not die and not happen!" one fan wrote, while another said, "God, what else is new. This show is nothing like it used to be. It went downhill since the plane crash. I’m sure everyone will be dead by the show's finale!" Another user only proved that his theory could be true with his observation: "Also Mere’s wearing black and that shit looks like a funeral outfit don’t f**k with me."

Guessing who might die, one fan said, "I feel like it’s Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams)." And he is not the only one to wish that. A Reddit user noted the same and wrote: "As for other characters, I feel the finale for season 15 left Jackson's fate up in the air. I like his character, but it's fallen flat this season. I'd prefer to see characters leave at their peak and he's past that. A good, proper sendoff might still redeem him."

One Reddit thread hinted on the death of Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). "If someone is dying, I hope it is Owen Hunt. How is it that a character that’s been on the show for more than ten years but has not grown one bit," one user said, and another one posted, "Owen has been around for ten years????? Good God, I cannot believe it’s been that long." Another comment read: "Honestly I don’t care if someone dies, as long as it’s not Alex. I mean they could even kill Mer at this point, her only storyline right now is Deluca drama. They’ve reduced her to nothing but a love interest and it’s so annoying. She used to be so powerful and a much deeper character."

Out of Jackson and Owen, it will be interesting to see which character's role is chopped off from the ABC series as the new season rolls out on September 16. Or perhaps, it could be someone the fans were not expecting to die at all.
