Update: Earlier when news broke of Glenn Thompson attending his gay son's wedding days after passing the Respect for Marriage Act, not much information was available on the particulars. It has now been revealed that Thompson's son Kale got married to the love of his life Phil Green, days after he voted against federal protections for gay marriage. The Pennsylvania rep had been accused of hypocrisy over his vote and his decision to attend his son's wedding.

'"Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son's marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life," Maddison Stone, Thompson's press secretary told the local newspaper the Centre Daily Times after the July 22 ceremony. "The Thompsons are very happy to welcome their new son-in-law into their family."

Republican Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania reportedly attended his gay son's wedding just three days after he voted against legislation to protect same-sex marriages. On July 19, the House of Representatives voted to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would codify same-sex marriage into law. The bill is headed to the Senate with a 267-157 vote, and as many as 47 House Republicans have voted in favor of the bill. Among the 157 people who voted against the bill was Thompson.

Among the other politicians who voted against the bill are Rep Matt Gaetz and Rep Jody Hice. The ones who voted in favor of the bill include Reps Nicole Malliotakis of New York, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Mike Garcia of California, Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, and John Katko of New York.

The gay son of the Republican lawmaker confirmed to NBC News on Monday, July 25, that he “married the love of [his] life” and that his “father was there". The son is not being named. Thompson's attendance at the wedding was also confirmed by his press secretary Maddison Stone. "Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,” Stone said the Thompsons are “very happy” to welcome their new son-in-law “into their family.”

Who are Glenn Thompson's children?

A member of the Republican Party, Glenn Thompson is married to Penny Ammerman-Thompson. He has three children, Kale, Logan Thompson and Parker Thompson.

Meanwhile, should the Respect for Marriage Act pass the Senate and be signed by the president, it will repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. This would ensure the recognition of same-sex marriage across the board, and provide a definition of marriage for federal purposes to include gay marriage. It would also prohibit any person acting under the color of state law from "failing to give full effect to an out of state marriage" on the basis of sex, race, gender, or national origin.

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade created concerns over the legality of same-sex marriage. Overturning Roe v Wade reversed federal abortion rights, with its ruling in the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization case. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's opinion in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization said the decision should affect only abortion and no other rights. "Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion," Alito wrote, according to Insider.

On the other hand, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative, wrote in his concurring opinion that the court "should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell." Thomas referenced to three landmark decisions regarding the right to access contraception, the invalidation of anti-sodomy laws, and the right to same-sex marriage.
