MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA: An 18-year-old girl from Bhind district in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India recently underwent an emergency two-hour-long surgery after allegedly swallowing a cell phone to win a fight with her brother. The bizarre incident occurred while the siblings were arguing over a Chinese-made mobile phone and the sister decided to end the fight by ingesting the device.

“The dispute between siblings led to a turn of events. As tempers flared during their argument, she took an impulsive step by swallowing the cell phone, causing immediate concern among her family,” an unnamed doctor told The Times of India. Shortly after, the girl experienced severe abdominal pain and persistent vomiting, prompting family members to rush her to the Jayarogya Hospital associated with Gwalior Medical College, the publication reported.

Emergency surgery performed to remove phone from girl’s stomach

The 18-year-old Indian girl required immediate medical attention after swallowing the cell phone and was admitted to the Jayarogya Hospital in Gwalior. Upon her arrival, a team of established doctors led by Associate Professor Dr Naveen Kushwaha, Head of Department Dr Prashant Srivastava, and unit-in-charge Prashant Pipariya, took over the case.

The doctors conducted immediate examinations on the teen, including a CT scan, X-ray, and ultrasound. They also reportedly concluded that the device cannot be safely removed through less invasive procedures like endoscopy and laparoscopy and required surgical intervention. The surgical team, assisted by resident surgeons Dr Ashwini Pandey and Dr Surendra Chouhan, dedicatedly worked for two consecutive hours to successfully retrieve the cell phone from the girl’s stomach.

The teen reportedly received 10 stitches from the procedure and was in stable condition after the surgery. She was also expected to be discharged soon. Presiding surgeon Dr Kushwah was taken aback by the case and told the publication that he never encountered such an incident in his two-decade-long career. The doctor also encouraged parents to be cautious before entrusting their teen children with such electronic devices.

‘Totally insane’

The internet was also left shocked by the case and took to Facebook to react to the freak incident. “Like seriously, how did she do that??? Didn't it stuck near her throat??? Totally insane,” one user asked. “She needs angry management therapy,” another commented. “That's why anger management should must be considered as compulsory subject in school,” added another. A fourth user wrote, “The parents of this child should keep an eye on her. Something is not right," while another joked, “After swallowing this phone was she still getting any calls?”
