HW Bush's death comes just months after the death of his wife and one of America's favorite first ladies, Barbara Bush, in April. They were married for 73 years, and he used to call her his "most beloved woman in the world." The Bushes were a power couple during his time in office, while the decorated war pilot and former CIA chief focused on global affairs, she became the face of the White House domestically.
Having served as the Vice President to Ronald Regan for his two terms, HW Bush became the first serving vice-president for more than 150 years to be elected to the highest office in 1989. His presidential terms were defined by his foreign policies at the time of the disenfranchisement of the USSR, which automatically made the US the unmatched global superpower. Two years after being elected to the office, he assembled an unprecedented coalition to defeat Iraq and took down Saddam Hussein.

Despite all his achievements on the global front, a weak economy, mostly triggered by the Cold War, left his fan base pretty weak. Although he had popularity ratings of 90 %, most Americans felt that he was neglecting domestic affairs. During his campaign for the 1992 elections for a second term in office, he had ran promised not to increase taxes, but the voters could not be swayed, and Bill Clinton defeated him.
However, despite the bad rep at the end of his term, HW Bush is looked upon as one of the most respectable presidents of the United States, and many have expressed their condolences upon hearing the news of his death.
RIP George Bush the first. I'm so sorry that you had to see your Republican Party descend into what it has become.
