A day after Gabby Petito's cause of death was revealed by coroner Dr. Brent Blue, her body has reportedly been released to a local mortuary in Wyoming for cremation. According to the Teton County coroner, the 22-year-old slain vlogger died from manual strangulation or throttling. The approximate time of her death was ascertained to be at least three to four weeks before her remains were discovered on September 19, 2021.

Meanwhile, Petito's fiance Brian Laundrie, who was named a 'person of interest' in the case, is still at large amid a nationwide manhunt for him. Internet sleuths have already concluded that Laundrie was the one to strangle Gabby, especially after reports emerged that she was a victim of domestic violence. However, no confirmation on Gabby Petito's killer can be given by the police as long as Brian Laundrie is on the run.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Gabby Petito's father Joseph Petito reportedly traveled to Wyoming to collect her ashes. Her family had already arranged a funeral and memorial service for her in September, where they used an empty urn in her memory. At that time, the FBI had not released her body to the family due to the ongoing autopsy. The postmortem examination is believed to have taken much longer than usual since her body was recovered in a partially decomposed state.

Teton County Coroner's office finally released her body to the local mortuary but no further details about the same were revealed. Her father will be collecting her ashes and bring them back home to Long Island, New York.

Gabby Petito's family also officially launched a charity foundation in her name to support the movement for her justice. The Gabby Petito Foundation was unveiled on social media on Sunday evening, October 3, 2021. Previously, Gabby's parents had proposed the idea of the foundation which would work towards helping families of missing people. The website homepage features an illustration of Gabby Petito with angel wings and a halo above her head, as she appears to be flying in the clouds with white doves around.
