MOSCOW, IDAHO: A forensic psychiatrist reportedly believes neither a random attack nor a serial killer was responsible for the murders of the four University of Idaho students, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, as the killer was "jealous" of them. Forensic psychiatrist Carole Lieberman said that the "multiple stabbings and bloody mess are signs that it was personal and that the killer was enraged.”

According to Newsweek, Lieberman said that the four students were "the epitome of good looks, success, and self-confidence." "At least that's the way it seemed to their classmates and others in the town. So, there would have been a lot of envy and jealousy towards them," Lieberman reportedly said, pointing out the possibility that the murderer felt rejected by one of the victims. "Perhaps some would-be suitor of Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, who felt that the girls were out of their league, felt rejected, whether they had approached them or just looked on from afar," she added. Lieberman said that she also believed that the killer could be an incel, which is a subculture of people who are involuntarily celibate.

As per Newsweek, an online community known as incel supports the sexist notion that men should be allowed to have sex with women. Some self-identified men use online forums to plan violent attacks against those who reject them romantically and refer to people with more active love lives as ‘Chad’ and ‘Stacy.’ Lieberman explained, "Indeed, the killer could be an incel who saw Kaylee and Madison as 'Stacys'—the name incels give to girls who they believe would look down on them and refuse to date or have sex with them. Incels can develop a lot of rage towards 'Stacys' as they play their imagined rejection over and over in their mind.”

Another expert, John DeCarlo, a professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven and a former police chief in Branford, explained to Newsweek that the murder could be the result of various factors such as "jealousy", "romantic affiliation" and a "hate crime" among others. "I think that it would be safe to assume that we could eliminate in this particular instance, with college students, a murder-for-hire. The other type of targeting would be targeting because of jealousy, targeting because of a romantic affiliation, targeting because of a hate crime or a bias crime,” he remarked.

When asked why the police were not releasing much information about their progress, DeCarlo replied that in order to preserve the credibility of the investigation, authorities were withholding some information regarding the killings. Meanwhile, the investigation has gone on for more than two weeks and cops are yet to make a breakthrough or any arrests. They are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
