LITTLETON, COLORADO: Disturbing details have come out in the murder of a five-year-old girl after her mother and her boyfriend were charged with her death.

Emily Canales succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries after being hospitalized in January, with her death ruled as a homicide. The child's mother Brianne Escamilla, 27, and her boyfriend Matthew Urias, 26, were subsequently taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder on June 28. A press release from the Colorado Springs Police Department noted how Urias was arrested on June 29 while Escamilla was apprehended on July 5 in Littleton, Colorado. The suspects are being held in the El Paso County jail and could face additional charges as the investigation proceeds.

The Colorado Gazette obtained a police affidavit indicating the young girl had sustained at least 20 blunt injuries in the days leading up to her death, including lung contusions, rib fractures, and several different hemorrhages. The affidavit also revealed that the girl's head was shaved at the time of her death, something her mother and stepfather allegedly imposed as a punishment. The perps reportedly admitted to the abuse during several rounds of interrogation following their arrest.

Authorities believe little Canales started to complain about stomach issues to her mother and stepfather two days prior to her death. She began fainting a day later, but her mother allegedly dismissed her daughter's complaints saying she was "being dramatic," as per the affidavit. Meanwhile, the mother's boyfriend confessed to police that he spanked the girl on the last day of her life and admitted "regret" at his abusive behavior. Canales fainted again on January 13, prompting the two parents to dial 911. As fate would have it, the girl died later that day.

As reported by Fox 21, Escamilla and Urias continued to hurl accusations at each other during multiple rounds of police questioning. The mother told investigators that her boyfriend would abuse Canales by picking her up by the ears and ribs. She also accused him of smacking the child's head "three times in the bathroom" and that he would regularly say "it would be easier if Emily wasn’t there." A witness later told police that she once saw Emily playing outside without a coat in freezing temperatures. When asked why she did not have sufficient clothing, the girl allegedly told the witness that her mother had deliberately locked her out of the apartment.

Canales' biological father, Manuel, was heartbroken after learning the new details. “She was just a beautiful little girl. She always said ‘Hi’ to everybody. Always wanted to talk to everybody,” he told KOAA News, “I’m still in denial, still in denial, like I don’t want to believe this,” the shattered father added. Manuel, who lives in El Paso, Texas, added, “This has ruined my life, I haven’t been able to focus or work or do just about anything.
