The biggest news on January 8 was Twitter and Facebook suspending President Donald Trump's accounts. In the aftermath of the Capitol riots on Wednesday (January 6), there has been a massive uproar on social media platforms since then and as Friday draws to a close, "Goodbye Twitter" was one of the trends that occupied the top searches on Twitter. Many netizens believed this was the handiwork of Trump fans who wanted to get back at the platform.

Please note MEAWW cannot independently verify and does not support the claims made on the Internet. Twitter users were soon slamming Trump supporters. "Not the trump stans getting goodbye twitter to be trending. we didnt want u here anyway bye af," read one of the tweets. This was seconded by another who wrote: "trumpies getting goodbye Twitter trending LOL we dont want you here anyway."

"All these Trumpers leaving and saying Goodbye Twitter. Like we're supposed to care? Twitter can now resume what it generally should be: interesting and fun!" remarked one of the users.

"The trumpers are saying “goodbye Twitter” as if they pay for the service or something. 1. Twitter already has collected all of the user data they need from you. And 2."

Earlier, Trump used the POTUS account to slam Twitter and the three-tweet rant ended with the comments being taken down. He accused the platform of banning "free speech". "Removing my account from their platform, to silence me - and YOU, the 75,000,000 great... patriots who voted for me," he wrote. He also accused it of going "further and further in banning free speech". He ended the post by saying, "we will not be SILENCED!"

"Trump supporters:How DARE you ban Trump?! You don't want his kind then #GoodbyeTwitter ! Goodbye Twitter! Twitter: Um... Thanks for our job easier? Leaving twitter just makes it easier. That's like wanting to impeach trump and he says, 'you know what I'm gonna arrest myself'," read one of the comments.

The trolls and the memes weren't far away. "goodbye twitter is trending because the trump fandom got too sensitive when trump got suspended lmao."

"I love all of these “Goodbye Twitter” people. I keep thinking, “Wait?! You mean... if you and people like you leave, Twitter will actually start to be a kind & friendly place again...?!” Kindness. What a concept!"

Trump's account was initially blocked for posting a string of tweets misleading users about the results of the presidential election and also encouraging the mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6. At the other end, there has been a string of developments with many of his aides and staffers resigning from their posts. The latest was Hope Hicks, who will exit the White House next week. She served as the senior counselor to Trump and cited it wasn't the Capitol riots that led her to make the move.
