MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Donald Trump has become the first-ever former US president in history to face criminal prosecution. A Manhattan grand jury tied to District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation filed a sealed indictment on Thursday, March 30, 2023, against Trump over his alleged role in paying “hush money” to adult star Stormy Daniels in 2016. The Trump family has bashed the indictment, calling it a mere opportunistic stunt to target a political opponent. They are "weaponizing the government to interfere in the 2024 election to stop Trump," said Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump, who is seeking a second Presidential term in 2024, has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence and denounced the New York indictment as "Political persecution and election Interference at the highest level in history." It is a "political Witch-Hunt trying to take down the leading candidate, by far, in the Republican Party,” the ex-president said and insisted, “I did absolutely nothing wrong.”

What is Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's probe against Donald Trump about?

During Trump's 2016 election, his former personal attorney Michael Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 in exchange for her silence over their alleged dalliance in 2006. However, Trump, who was married at the time to former first lady Melania Trump, denied the allegations of sleeping with Daniels and said that he has no knowledge of the payment. In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court and was sentenced to three years in prison for crimes related to Daniels' payment and another to model Karen McDougal he helped arrange prior to the election.

At the time of Cohen's guilty plea, Trump was the president and did not face charges by federal prosecutors over the payments. Even though Cohen paid Daniels personally, he was reimbursed by the Trump Organization under the guise of legal expenses, promoting federal prosecutors to charge the money under false accounting. If the former president is convicted of bookkeeping fraud as a felony, he could face up to four years in prison.

A jury last month found the Trump Organization guilty and convicted the organization on charges of conspiracy, criminal tax fraud, falsifying business records, and filing false tax returns in a scheme to defraud the state. The organization was sentenced to pay the maximum fine of $1.6 million dollars. The case is unrelated to the civil case being brought by NY Attorney General Letitia James against the Trump Organization.

Meanwhile, Trump previously claimed any charges brought against him would be barred by the statute of limitations which could mean five years, but that could also be extended if the defendant continuously lives out of state as Trump did during his presidency, The New York Times reported. Also, the statute of limitations was also extended by more than a year in New York due to the coronavirus pandemic. The former president is also facing potential criminal charges in Georgia and at the federal level.

'The fascist left won't stop with Trump!'

Trump's family has slammed the indictment calling it a nosy stunt to target a political opponent. "This isn't just the radical left weaponizing the government to target their political enemies, this is them weaponizing the government to interfere in the 2024 election to stop Trump," Trump's son Donald Trump Jr tweeted, adding, "The only solution is to shove it down their throats and put him back in the White House!!! #MAGA." "We all know that the RINOs ['Republicans in name only'] are secretly happy about the indictment, but the fascist left won't stop with Trump," he added in a later tweet. He further said, "They're power-hungry & will do anything to crush their political opponents. If we're ever going to save our country, the entire GOP needs to finally figure that out."

"This is third world prosecutorial misconduct," tweeted Eric Trump, adding, "It is the opportunistic targeting of a political opponent in a campaign year." "This is what you get for giving a crooked politician 1 million dollars," he said, adding, "Alvin Bragg is a Soros puppet..."

"We overcame the Russia hoax," tweeted Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr's fiancee. "We overcame the Mueller witch hunt. We overcame two impeachment shams. We will OVERCOME Alvin Bragg's political prosecution. Just remember, they're only after Trump because he fights for YOU!"

Daniels’ attorney Clifford Brewster said, "The indictment of Donald Trump is no cause for joy.” “The hard work and conscientiousness of the grand jurors must be respected. Now let truth and justice prevail. No one is above the law. #teamstormy,” he tweeted.

'He's going for a new reality show'

The internet was also quick to react to the news of Trump's indictment. "Well, looks like he's going for a new reality show: "The Orange is the New Black Apprentice," a social media user tweeted. Another user claimed, "Still wrapping my mind around the politics of this." "Why isn't the CCP-owned Joe Biden syndicate being indicted? The people demand it," read another tweet.
