Does Patty James NOT want Matt James married? Angry ‘The Bachelor’ fans say ‘controlling’ mother ‘ruined him’

Will 'The Bachelor' Season 25 end without a proposal? The viewers are haunted by the question after what unfolded in the finale of 'The Bachelor', which saw Matt James take a step back in his relationship with Michelle Young and Rachael Kirkconnell. Everything was sailing smoothly until Matt James' mother Patty James weighed in to offer her opinion about her son getting married, while citing her own marriage as an example, which only made the former question some of the biggest choices he has made. 

At first, Patty seemed more than thrilled to meet Michelle Young and Rachael Kirkconnell. She even tells her son that she is extremely happy for him and the two women in his life seem to understand him well enough to be his future partner. However, her opinion about her son's future with a woman was short-lived as she went on to ask if love was all that was needed to keep a relationship going.

After meeting Rachael and Michelle, when Matt sees his mother and brother discuss the further course, Patty asks him if he's sure about committing to one woman for the rest of his life. Although she didn't doubt the ladies and Matt's feelings for one another, she was rather concerned about the stability of a relationship based off on feelings as they tend to "fade". 

For Matt, who has always had issues comprehending his parents' relationship and his father not being accountable for his actions, he found his mother's words deeply affecting. 

After a lot of thinking and going back and forth, Matt gathers the courage to tell Rachael and Michelle that he isn't sure if marriage is what he wants with them at this point in life, for he doesn't want to repeat his father's mistake. Matt seemed unhinged with his decision, despite the turmoil it was going to create in all their lives. 

Meanwhile, the fans are blaming Patty responsible for Matt's condition. A few have slammed her as a "controlling" mother, who "ruined" her son's life by talking him out of marriage. One tweeted, "Matt’s mom says one thing and bam he’s not ready... it’s amazing how much control a mother has on her son #TheBachelor" Another added, "MATT’S MOTHER RUINED HIM IN ONE EPISODE #TheBachelor " One tweeted "You are not your father and mother’s relationship. Just because she wasn’t happy in life, doesn’t mean that he can’t be! Very, very emotionally manipulative."

'The Bachelor' finale aired on ABC on March 15 at 8 pm ET.
