The future of 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' has been on shaky ground ever since 'Doctor Strange' director Scott Derrickson left the project. But now it looks like the project may finally go ahead with a fan-favorite in the director's chair.

Marvel is reportedly considering Sam Raimi, who directed the acclaimed 'Spider-Man' trilogy for Sony, to helm the upcoming project. Variety reports that Raimi is in talks for the position while Derrickson will remain an executive producer.

Derrickson quit the project in January citing creative differences. In a statement concerning the director's exit, Marvel announced that "Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU."

The director also made his own statement on Twitter, saying that the decision was mutual and that he stepped down due to creative differences. "Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP," he tweeted.

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' is expected to get into the more terrifying side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something that Raimi should be able to execute to perfection considering he is also the director behind the cult classic 'Evil Dead' series. The project is scheduled to begin production in May but there has been no word yet on whether filming may be delayed with all the changes behind the camera.

The upcoming movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, the Master of the Mystic Arts; with Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor appearing as Wong and Karl Mordo respectively. Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff in the MCU, is also expected to appear in the movie.

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' is set to release in cinemas on May 7, 2021.
