Disney has announced that the word 'fairy godmother' would be replaced with more accessible, gender-neutral titles in its theme park costume boutiques. But some fans have been left outraged by the change, according to a report in New York Post. The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiques are well-known stores in Disneyland and Disney World that provide magical makeovers and for children between ages 3 to 12. The boutiques issued an update about replacing 'fairy godmother' with more gender neutral terms on their websites.

"Employees who were formerly known as 'Fairy Godmothers in Training' will now be known as 'Fairy Godmother's Apprentices' after the stores will re-open," the update stated. Additionally, the salons, which give makeovers to kids to transform them into princesses or knights, will reopen from pandemic-era closures on August 25, the company said this week.

The announcement offended several Disney fans who took to social media to mark their displeasure. One person wrote, “Get woke, go broke," while another wrote, “This is a mental illness…the magic is gone".

On their decision to use more gender neutral terms, the Disney blog 'Streaming the Magic' on July 18, said, "This way cast members that might not identify as female can still be part of the process to dress up & style the children without having to refer to themselves as a female Disney character."

The Walt Disney World Resort shared a post on Twitter on Wednesday, July 20, and wrote, "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Cast Members Get Gender Neutral Title, New Look at MagicBand+, Disneyland Paris Cuts Holes in Hoses to Combat Extreme Heat & More: Daily Recap (7/19/22)." Disney has also eliminated the ‘Take a wench for a bride’ moment from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ attraction and the ‘Trader Sam’ shrunken head dealer character from 'Jungle Cruise'. Recently, Disney has made a push to appear more inclusive and politically correct, angering some Disney diehards. The decisions were made at a time when Disney is embroiled in a cultural fight in Florida over the ‘Don't Say Gay’ rule.

According to the Daily Mail, Disney CEO Bob Chapek declined to speak out against the Florida bill earlier this year, which prohibits kindergarten through third-graders from discussing gender identity and sexual orientation. Disney employees were outraged by the lack of response, and Chapek reacted by criticizing the legislation, drawing the ire of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis responded by signing a bill that would deprive Disney's Florida theme parks of their autonomy. The measure, which was passed in April, eliminates the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a self-governing organization with the authority to impose its own zoning regulations, create infrastructure, and levy taxes on property that lies in both Orange and Osceola counties.
