On the fourth day of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, his attorneys played videos of singer Madonna and actor Johnny Depp "promoting" violence, as per reports. Along with the celebrities, Breitbart reported that clips of other "prominent Democrats" including that of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were also shown. The "montage" was introduced by one of Trump's attorneys, David Schoen, who claimed that Democrats accusing Trump of condoning violence were "hypocrites". He said, "We need to show you some of their own words."

What did the montage include?

According to reports, the montage included singer Madonna speaking at a Women’s March in 2017 in Washington, where she said, "Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House." Although, she did later said that the remark she had made were taken out of context. The clip had Depp saying, "When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” in 2017 during the Glastonbury Festival in England. The YouTube channel, Fox Breaking News, posted the video of Trump's lawyer presenting the montage. You can watch it below.

The publication further reported that the montage didn't stop at celebrities, but also added other Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Maxine Waters "advocating political violence." In one of the clips, President Biden is heard saying that he would like to take Trump "behind the gym if I were in high school.” Aprt from politicians, celebrities and public figures too have come forward with acts that can be construed as advocating violence against the ex-president. One such incident was when comedian Kathy Griffin "brandished" a faux severed head of the twice impeached president "implying" that she had decapitated him.

This offensive from Trump's lawyers comes after Democrats accused Trump of inciting the Capitol riots that shook the country on January 6, 2021, leading to the president's impeachment in the first place. If Trump ends up being convicted, he would likely be ineligible to run for office again if voted so by the Senate.

Deadline reported that Schoen also accused House impeachment managers of "selectively editing" Trump's words when they presented a video during the impeachment trial. They focused on when Trump said, "We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore," before the riots occurred that day. In fact, Trump's defense team also presented a video montage that sees Democrats using "fight" while making statements or during speeches - this included Rep. Jamie Raskin. The publication also reported that the montage that Trump's lawyers presented didn't provide any "setting or situation".

CSPAN posted this presentation by Trump's lawyers on Twitter, tweeting, "WATCH: President Trump's Attorney David Schoen plays video montage of Democrats saying the word "fight." Once it concludes: "You didn't do anything wrong. It's a word people use, but please stop the hypocrisy." They also provided the link to the entire video.
