ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Republican Governor Brian Kemp has defeated the fan-favorite Democrat Stacey Abrams and has secured his second term. The dramatic rematch of their 2018 battle has once again played out in the favor of Kemp. Then-Governor Nathan Deal was constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third term. Now, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate has conceded to Kemp marking it the second win for the Republican. If Abrams would have bagged the victory, she would become Georgia's first Black governor and the first Black woman to serve as governor in the U.S.

This time around, the 59-year-old governor used his four-year-long experience for the 2022 midterms, highlighting his public health guidance that helped keep Georgia businesses open during the Covid-19 pandemic, loosening the strictness on gun laws, suspending the state’s gas tax and proposed using a budget surplus of more than $6 billion to fund further tax breaks for residents which seemed to do the trick. Four years ago, Kemp defeated Abrams by about 55,000 votes. This year, had nearly 3 million more votes than Abrams. Kemp was showered with 19,40,719 votes whereas Abrams was supported with 16,39,694 votes, hinting at the massive win that the returning Republican governor would enjoy. Back in 2020, Kemp was thrashed by Donald Trump as well for not doing enough to change the outcome of the election. Trump then backed former Sen. David Perdue who still lost to Kemp in the May primary and was backed by Mike Pence.
